Strengthening the defense against infectious diseases

Pneumococcal vaccine 15 is produced by MSD Pharmaceutical Group (USA) using advanced technology, helping to prevent dangerous strains including 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, 33F causing invasive and non-invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, otitis media, sinusitis...

Vaccines also create a long-lasting protective immune response, while reducing the rate of healthy carriers and reducing the ability of pathogens to spread in the community.

According to information from the manufacturer, pneumococcal vaccine 15 has been approved in 65 countries and officially used in more than 40 countries worldwide from 2022.

According to BSCKI Bach Thi Chinh - medical director of VNVC Vaccination System, pneumococcal vaccine 15 is used for children from 2 months old and up (the earliest is from 6 weeks old) and adults.

Pneumococcal bacteria have more than 100 different serotypes, they usually reside in the throat of each person called a healthy carrier and lie dormant waiting for an opportunity. When the body's immune system is weakened or there are health problems, the bacteria will take the opportunity to invade the respiratory tract when in contact with nasal and throat secretions from a sick person or an asymptomatic healthy carrier. Then the bacteria will attack the brain, lungs, blood... to cause disease.

Currently, there are many types of pneumococcal vaccines in the world, helping to increase protection against the above dangerous bacteria. Experts around the world recommend early and complete vaccination, combining many types of pneumococcal vaccines from many different generations.

"Therefore, Vietnam has an additional high-tech vaccine, increasing the coverage of pneumococcal strains as a new weapon, adding to the strength of preventing infectious diseases for children and adults in our country. This combination helps strengthen the effectiveness of disease prevention and covers other dangerous pneumococcal strains in the vaccine," Dr. Chinh informed.

Doctor Chinh said that along with pneumococcal 10, pneumococcal 13 and pneumococcal 23 vaccines, VNVC's introduction of pneumococcal 15 vaccine to serve the people is in line with the general trend of the world.

Early vaccination is recommended.

Depending on the vaccination time and epidemiological conditions of each locality, the doctor will advise on the type of pneumococcal vaccine suitable for the age of the person being vaccinated. However, pneumococcal vaccination is recommended as early as possible to protect against dangerous diseases caused by pneumococcal bacteria.

Dr. Phan Trong Giao, medical director of MSD Vietnam, said that MSD has a long history in the field of pediatrics and pneumococcal disease prevention. "We are confident that the new pneumococcal vaccine with wide serotype coverage and good immunogenicity will provide a solid foundation to help protect the Vietnamese people, especially young children, from the burden caused by pneumococcus," Dr. Giao shared.

Pneumococcal bacteria are susceptible to co-infection with other respiratory pathogens such as influenza, COVID-19, and are increasingly resistant to many antibiotics, making treatment very difficult, prolonged, and costly.

Pneumococcal disease can cause outbreaks ranging from small to large, commonly occurring in crowded living environments such as schools, companies, factories, nursing homes, childcare centers, etc.

Children under 5 years of age and adults 50 years of age and older, especially those with underlying medical conditions, have the highest rates of complications and death from pneumococcal disease.

In addition to performing well in vaccination activities, VNVC is preparing to build a vaccine and biological product factory to proactively supply vaccines domestically.

In the coming time, VNVC is continuing to negotiate with vaccine manufacturers around the world to soon bring important vaccines into the country and deploy vaccination for both children and adults.

In particular, the system is aiming to produce high-tech vaccines to proactively supply domestically while building a world-leading vaccine and biological product factory. The factory will start construction in 2025 with a scale of about 2,000 billion VND.
