Ly Hai and Minh Ha at the recent "Flip Side 8" movie showcase event in Ho Chi Minh City.

Pressure always comes from yourself

- Did you and Mr. Ly Hai feel pressured when making "Lat mat 8", especially when part 7 was so successful and is currently the second highest-grossing film in history in Vietnam?

Every year, Hai always does new things and changes the script and genre, and does not repeat what has been done. Therefore, when making a new film, we always think of ourselves as starting from zero, not relying on old standards.

As people working in the creative field, Hai and I are not only conscious of doing new things but also addressing social issues that people are facing so that the audience can be relieved and share after watching the film.

So the pressure always comes from ourselves because we have to do things differently from ourselves. From the beginning, Mr. Hai was a famous singer who accepted to give up everything to make movies and suddenly stopped singing when he was at his peak and switched to a field starting from zero. He wanted to realize his dream when he was over 40 years old because he studied cinema when he was young.

After 5 years of making films, what Hai has done with films is more than the goal I set. Knowing that Hai is pursuing cinema, his family was very scared but I was not. Because I believe that life is not about waiting and agreed to help Hai when he makes films. I think I should create opportunities for myself even though no one around me supports me. That was the biggest pressure we have ever experienced.

Minh Ha always fully supports her husband in his artistic career.

- Part 8 is the most heavily invested in the "Flip Side" series. When it was still in the script, how did Hai convince you to do the big scenes in the film? Was there ever a time when the two of you had different opinions about money?

In this part, we filmed 3 big scenes, including the flood scene. While filming, we encountered a real flood that washed away the elaborate set, so we had to redo it. Right from the beginning of writing the script, Mr. Hai, as a co-producer, had to consider the feasibility factor during the filming process.

Knowing that, I have never used budget to limit his creativity. As a producer, I always try to be efficient, even increasing the budget as long as it does not affect creativity. I do not want Mr. Hai to worry about having only that much money to make a film, so I will try to meet it as best as possible.

- In the end, how much money did "Flip Side 8" cost you?

We have not announced the production costs for a long time because I think the audience will not care how much money was spent on this film. The audience also knows that Mr. Hai is willing to go all out to tell the story effectively and the investment is natural. We want to keep the trust of the audience who have come to our film, so even if we have to increase the budget, we will try to ensure the best quality.

Minh Ha said what Ly Hai gave her was more important than any valuable gift.

If it's not work, Hai always comes back to pick me up to go with him.

- Mr. Hai said he doesn't manage money so he hardly buys you anything. Do you ever feel hurt?

I don't care about gifts. As soon as I met Mr. Hai, I felt secure and that is the hardest thing to find. I need a man who always gives me a sense of security, a solid support and a sense of trust when I'm with him.

Since I met Hai, I have never had to ask him where he went or what he did. It's not that I trust him, but that he gives me that feeling. A man who wants to do something for me will know how. For example, if he comes home late, he will proactively inform me and tell me to eat first if I'm hungry. If it's not work but going somewhere with friends, Hai always comes back to pick me up to go with him. I need that more from my husband than jewelry or something expensive.

The beauty of mother of 4 Minh Ha at the age of 40.

- In the family, do you or Ly Hai take care of the children or make important decisions?

We have to negotiate and talk to each other a lot because all 4 children have their own personalities. To understand them and have them see us as friends, parents themselves must learn to change. We cannot use our parental authority to decide our children's future. This saying was also used by Hai in Lat mat 8. In my family, Hai's mother, Hai and I are all from different generations. I am 17 years older than Hai.

- Does that age gap cause you two to have different opinions?

When we first started dating, we had different opinions. I think even people of the same age have different opinions, so we have to overcome them to reconcile. Therefore, sharing and understanding each other is very important, not only in the family but also in social relationships.

Stop at 4

- How do you produce films and take care of your family with 4 children?

I have to thank my grandmother first. She is a modern thinker and helps me a lot in my work. For example, whenever Hai and I are away, she stays home to help me manage everything. Without her, it would be difficult for me to do what I want.

As for my children, I taught them to be independent from a young age, and even reminded them to do the same for me. Hai and I always remind each other to reduce our work to spend time with our children. Therefore, Hai and I almost never go out with friends, and all our free time outside of work is spent with our children. We let our children go hiking or participate in activities they like.

Both of them refused all parties with friends because they wanted to spend time with their children.

- Minh Ha - Ly Hai will probably stop at 4 children, right?

I see 2 boys and 2 girls are on the scale so if we have more children it will be 6 but I think that number is a bit much (laughs).
