At 10 p.m. on August 5, Van Don Special Zone Medical Center received an urgent report from Thang Loi Commune Health Station about a pregnant woman BTA (29 years old, first pregnancy, 37 weeks and 2 days pregnant) who went into labor, had severe abdominal pain, suspected abnormal fetal position - high risk of difficult labor, unable to give birth normally at the commune level.

Immediately after receiving the information, comrade Pham Quoc Viet - Head of the Administrative Organization Department directly directed and arranged specialized rescue boats, coordinated with functional departments to fully prepare emergency equipment for foreign hospitals to ensure safety, and be ready to cross the sea to the island to pick up patients in dangerous weather conditions.

The Medical Center immediately activated the “red alert” procedure for emergency treatment outside the hospital, mobilizing a team of 4 members: Specialist Doctor I Bui Thanh Tuan - Head of the Department of Reproductive Health Care and Obstetrics, Team Leader; Doctor Nguyen Tuan Trung; Midwife Truong Thi Thanh Hoa; Rescue boat operator.

At exactly 11pm on August 5, in the pitch-black night, the rescue team left the mainland on a specialized boat, despite dangerous weather conditions such as heavy rain, continuous thunder and lightning, high waves and strong winds of level 6-7. The journey of more than 22 nautical miles (nearly 40 km) to Thang Loi Island took place in unprecedentedly harsh conditions.

The pregnant woman was taken to shore for emergency treatment from Thang Loi Island.

At nearly 1:00 a.m. on August 6, the rescue boat safely reached the island. Immediately, the team coordinated with Thang Loi Medical Station to conduct a quick examination and diagnosed: high head position, narrow pelvis, prognosis of not being able to give birth naturally, needing an emergency cesarean section.

In the middle of a stormy night, transporting the pregnant woman to the mainland was a big challenge, but in the face of the critical situation, the emergency team decided to take the pregnant woman on a boat back to the Center, while performing emergency interventions along the way such as intravenous fluids, anti-spasms, and closely monitoring the mother and fetus. At exactly 1:30 a.m. on August 6, the pregnant woman was safely brought back to the Medical Center.

That same night, the emergency cesarean section was performed successfully. A pink, crying baby girl weighing 2.4kg was born, to the emotion and relief of the entire team.

Currently, the health of both mother and baby is stable and is being monitored and cared for postpartum at the Center.
