Mexican authorities said on August 26 that a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol car, killing eight soldiers.
The incident occurred in the town of Coahuyayana in the western state of Michoacán, Mexico. (Source: The Week) |
Speaking to reporters, Coahuyayana mayor Gildardo Ruiz Velázquez said the criminal group used a homemade armored truck to carry out the attack and then left the scene.
Mr. Velázquez condemned the bloody attack and sent condolences to the victim's family.
Mayor Coahuyayana also asked the federal government to take measures to arrest the perpetrators and to step up the crackdown on increasingly rampant criminal gangs in the area.
One of three towns in the Pacific coast state of Michoacán, Coahuyayana is used by the notorious drug gangs Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Tepalcatepec Cartel and The Knights Templar to transport cocaine from South America to Mexico.
Previously, on July 21, an armed attack at a beer hall in the city of Morelia, capital of the western state of Michoacán, left five minors dead and two injured.
