From changes in awareness and practices to infrastructure investment, medical waste management, technology application, and the development of hospital culture, the provincial health sector has focused on building green, clean, and beautiful medical facilities from the provincial level to the grassroots, aiming for the satisfaction of the people.
Focusing on the patient
One morning in late December, before the long New Year's holiday, Mrs. Phung Thi Man (from Cao Loc commune) leisurely strolled through the small, tree-filled grounds of the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital. This was her third time being hospitalized for a chronic illness. Mrs. Man shared: "The hospital is getting cleaner and tidier. The wards are spacious, the corridors are filled with flowers and plants, and the medical staff remind family members to maintain general hygiene. There are trees, benches, and exercise equipment here; we feel better and truly comfortable, just like at home."
Not only provincial-level medical facilities, but also commune and ward health stations are very interested in building a green, clean, and beautiful healthcare environment. At the beginning of 2025, Thai Binh Commune Health Station won first prize in the commune-level health station category in the "Green, Clean, and Beautiful Healthcare Facility" competition organized by the health sector. Dr. Dang Van Ha, Head of Thai Binh Commune Health Station, shared: "From the very beginning of implementing the construction of a green, clean, and beautiful healthcare facility, we determined that we must first unify the understanding among all healthcare staff. A good environment not only creates a positive impression on patients but is also a prerequisite for improving the quality of healthcare. Therefore, the station has implemented many synchronized measures: renovating and upgrading infrastructure; planning green spaces, medicinal herb gardens, and vegetable gardens; and strictly adhering to the Ministry of Health's criteria for green, clean, and beautiful healthcare facilities." Every morning before work and every Friday afternoon, the medical staff work together to thoroughly clean the premises, care for the greenery, and ensure that the 5S principles (Sorting, Setting in order, Cleaning, Standardizing, Sustaining) become a regular habit at the clinic, contributing to creating a friendly, airy, and safe environment for patients.
In reality, a green, clean, and friendly treatment environment has a positive impact on the psychology of both patients and hospital staff, contributing to improved treatment effectiveness and reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections. To achieve this, over the years, along with the requirement to improve professional quality, the provincial health sector has identified the construction of green, clean, and beautiful medical facilities as one of its key tasks, closely linked to the goal of putting patients at the center of service. This perspective has been concretized through various programs, plans, and evaluation criteria, integrated into the management and operation of the sector.
Synchronize solutions
Mr. Hoang Xuan Truong, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, said: "In recent times, the Department of Health has directed its affiliated units to implement many measures simultaneously: from renovating and repairing infrastructure; strengthening control of medical waste; improving environmental hygiene; to building hospital culture and innovating the style and attitude of serving patients. The goal is to create a safe, friendly, and patient-centered environment for medical examination and treatment. The construction of green medical facilities is also closely linked to the requirements of disease prevention and control, especially in the context of climate change and the increasing risk of emerging and re-emerging diseases. A clean and well-controlled medical environment will contribute to limiting cross-infection and protecting the safety of both patients and medical staff."
Accordingly, in 2025, medical facilities in the province will continue to focus on improving the landscape, beautifying the grounds, strengthening environmental hygiene management, handling medical waste, and at the same time innovating service style and attitude to ensure patient satisfaction.
Ms. Doan Thu Huong, an officer in the Planning, Nursing, and Financial Accounting Department (Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital), shared: "We instill in each healthcare worker the spirit of being both a professional and a maintainer of the hospital environment. From saving electricity and water to properly sorting waste and keeping patient rooms and offices clean, all are included in our regular reminders. The hospital has integrated the 'green, clean, and beautiful' criteria into its emulation movements, considering it one of the criteria for evaluating the performance of each department and ward."
With that understanding, "Green Healthcare" is no longer just a slogan but is now present in every hospital corridor, every patient room, and every examination area. At many hospitals, regional health centers, and commune/ward health stations, the familiar image of cramped, green spaces is gradually being replaced by airy, clean environments. Trees are being planted, internal pathways are being redesigned, and waiting areas are being arranged scientifically, creating a pleasant feeling for patients from the moment they enter the healthcare facility.
Simultaneously, environmental hygiene and infection control measures have been strengthened. Units strictly maintain procedures for sorting, collecting, transporting, and treating medical waste; use environmentally friendly products; and limit single-use plastic waste in professional activities and daily life.
In addition, the provincial health sector is also promoting the application of information technology, implementing electronic medical records, cashless payments, etc. This not only improves management efficiency but also contributes to reducing paper usage, aiming for sustainable development.
A key highlight in the green healthcare journey is linking the creation of a green, clean, and beautiful environment with improving hospital quality. According to the 2025 hospital quality assessment results, 100% of provincial-level hospitals and regional health centers in the province maintained a rating of at least Grade II; the overall patient satisfaction rate with healthcare services reached over 94%, exceeding the set target (over 80%). This is considered a true measure of the effectiveness of the solutions that have been and are being implemented.
In the coming period, the provincial health sector will continue to integrate green healthcare criteria into the planning and investment development of the healthcare system; strengthen inspection and supervision of implementation at facilities; and promote communication efforts to encourage people to work together to maintain a green, clean, and beautiful environment for medical examination and treatment.
The journey of building green healthcare at medical facilities throughout the province is a long-term process, requiring perseverance, consensus, and responsibility from both the healthcare system and the community. The "greening" of the healthcare environment today is laying the first solid foundations for a civilized healthcare environment, where patients receive not only professional treatment but also care with peace of mind and trust.
