According to Insider Gaming , in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Microsoft's head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, shared Xbox's perspective on the current VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) fields.
Booty has suggested that Xbox games need to reach around 10 million players to be considered successful. The company has had around 10 games hit the 10 million player mark so far. However, in the VR and AR markets, that number seems unlikely to be achieved, so it's still quite small compared to Xbox's ambitions.
Xbox's mixed reality headset is a distant dream
Another big name in the virtual reality space is Sony, which has said it has had some success with its PSVR2 headset. Specifically, the device has outsold its predecessor, the PSVR. In March, the company said that the PSVR2 sold around 270,000 units in the first six weeks after its release. The figures reportedly showed that the PSVR2 had 8% more sales than the original PSVR during the same period.
Meanwhile, Apple recently unveiled its latest mixed reality (VR/AR) headset, the Apple Vision Pro. Described as a device designed for gamers, the Apple Vision Pro is entering a market that competes with Meta's Quest, Sony's PSVR2, Valve's Index, and many others.
Matt Booty’s comments suggest that Xbox is still a long way from launching a VR and AR focused product. Fans will have to wait and see what they do in the future and accept experiences from other brands.
