Less than half a year since its official launch, VinFast VF 6 has quickly taken the top spot in the B-size CUV segment, with cumulative sales reaching 7,307 vehicles in the first 5 months of the year. This figure far surpasses gasoline-powered competitors such as Toyota Yaris Cross (4,270 vehicles) or Mitsubishi Xforce (3,144 vehicles), which were once market leaders in 2024.
B-size CUV: The playground changes hands, first time for electric vehicles
Over the past 5 years, the B-class CUV segment has continuously witnessed a change in the throne, with prominent models such as Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and then Mitsubishi Xforce in late 2023. However, 2025 marks a turning point when for the first time an electric car like the VF 6 dominates sales in a segment that was dominated by gasoline cars.

In May, VF 6 continued to maintain its performance with more than 1,000 vehicles sold, leading the entire B-class CUV market. Toyota Yaris Cross followed closely behind, but the sales gap was still more than 3,000 vehicles after 5 months.
What do experts say about the breakthrough of VF 6?
According to Mr. Tran Dang Chinh Tri, an expert in analyzing the Vietnamese automobile market, the initial success of VF 6 comes from a combination of dual advantages, which are that electric vehicles enjoy tax support policies, competitive prices, and strong promotional campaigns from the company.

“The VF 6 is not only cheaper after deducting promotions, but is also 100% exempt from registration fees according to government policy. In addition, VinFast supports additional registration fees, reducing the car price by up to 4%, making the rolling cost significantly lower than gasoline models in the same segment,” Mr. Tri analyzed.
The VF 6 is also currently preferred by customers for service business purposes thanks to its low operating costs, spacious interior, and smart support features.
Gasoline cars cluster together, the race is close behind
Besides VF 6, Toyota Yaris Cross is the second most prominent name with 4,270 cars sold, accounting for about 19% of the market share. The Japanese car model maintains its sales thanks to a regular discount policy since the beginning of the year and a wide dealer network.

Mitsubishi Xforce, a direct competitor of Yaris Cross, has shown signs of slowing down with sales falling for two consecutive months. Although the manufacturer also launched a 100% registration fee incentive in June, the competitive pressure from electric vehicles is making the segment increasingly fierce.
In the middle group, Hyundai Creta had a booming April but slumped in May as the old version's supply was almost exhausted, and customers started waiting for the new upgrade. Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos maintained stable sales but did not break out, partly because the promotions were not as attractive as their competitors.
The Mazda CX-3 remains at the bottom of the rankings, with modest sales due to limited brand recognition in the segment and a lack of competitive incentives.

In addition to models with clear sales, the B-size CUV segment also sees the participation of many Chinese models such as Geely Coolray, Omoda C5, Lynk & Co 06, MG ZS... However, because these companies do not periodically announce sales figures, their actual market share position cannot be clearly determined.
The future of the "electric vehicle" segment or just a short-term cycle?
The dominance of the VF 6 opens up a new perspective for the B-segment CUV segment, where electric vehicles are gradually replacing traditional gasoline vehicles, at least in the popular price range. However, some experts say it is too early to confirm this as a long-term trend.

“The current success of VF 6 is due to the support policy for electric vehicles, affordable prices, and domestic brand image. However, if battery costs and charging infrastructure do not improve rapidly, the ability to maintain the number one position is still a big question mark,” said Mr. Tri.
However, in the short term, VinFast has proven that a purely Vietnamese electric car can completely beat international competitors, at least on home turf.
