On May 24, Sa Thay District People's Court ( Kon Tum ) held a mobile first instance trial for a group of illegal loggers who cut down 147 cubic meters of wood in a natural forest.

According to the indictment, at the end of August 2022, Vo Van Duc (41 years old, residing in Pleiku City, Gia Lai ) hired Le Tien Thu (48 years old, residing in Thanh Hoa), Do Van Long (38 years old), Le Van Tho (40 years old, all residing in Chu Puh District, Gia Lai) to illegally cut down wood for him.
On August 25, 2022, Le Tien Thu, Do Van Long, and Le Van Tho went to plot 6, sub-area 692 (belonging to the forest area managed by Sa Thay Forestry One Member Co., Ltd.) to illegally cut down 84 trees, with a total volume of 147 m3 . This amount of wood belongs to wood types from group 3 to group 8.
While destroying the forest, the group of illegal loggers divided themselves into guards and used walkie-talkies to communicate and alert each other. On the afternoon of August 26, 2022, when they discovered that the authorities were coming to inspect, the illegal loggers immediately found a way to escape.
On September 1, 2022, during the patrol, the authorities discovered 84 trees that had been cut down and reported the incident to Sa Thay Forestry Company Limited. After that, the authorities intervened and quickly investigated and arrested Le Tien Thu, Do Van Long, and Le Van Tho.
As for Vo Van Duc, after the incident was exposed, he fled the area. Currently, Sa Thay District Police have issued a wanted order and decided to separate the criminal case to continue investigating, verifying, and arresting the suspect Duc.
The defendants sawed down 84 trees with a total volume of more than 147 m3 , causing damage of nearly 572 million VND. At the end of the trial, the panel sentenced Le Tien Thu to 8 years in prison, Le Van Tho to 7 years in prison and Do Van Long to 6 years and 6 months in prison, all for violating regulations on forest exploitation and protection and forest products.
