Taiwanese mangoes in Dong Nai are only 1 thousand VND/kg, farmers let them ripen and fall all over the ground

(DN) - For about a month now, when the harvest season is in full swing, mango prices have been falling sharply. Currently, many gardeners in Dong Nai are facing a situation where traders have abandoned their deposits and not come to buy, causing farmers to leave their mangoes on the trees without harvesting. Ripe mangoes have fallen all over the ground because the selling price is too low, not enough to cover the cost of picking.

Specifically, the Taiwanese mango variety for export is now only 1-1.5 thousand VND/kg, the lowest in many years. Meanwhile, in the same period last year, when exports were good, the price of this mango sold at the garden was nearly 30 thousand VND/kg, and at the low point, it was also about 10 thousand VND/kg. For the 3 rainy season mangoes, at the beginning of the season, the price of the young mango variety (young mango) was about 7 thousand VND/kg, but during the season it dropped to about 2 thousand VND/kg and farmers are currently unable to sell.

According to mango farmers in Dinh Quan district, the locality with the largest mango acreage in the province, due to erratic weather, the off-season mango crop has suffered a severe failure; during the main season, many gardens' productivity has also decreased by 30-50% compared to the same period last year.

Despite the poor harvest, the price of this fruit has continuously decreased and is currently unsaleable. Mango farmers are losing money on their investment because of both poor harvest and low price.

The reason for the sharp drop in mango prices is that many types of summer fruits are in harvest season, supply is abundant while exports are facing difficulties and domestic consumption is also very slow.

Currently, the whole province has about 12 thousand hectares of mango with a total output of about 115 thousand tons. Dong Nai currently mainly grows Taiwanese mango and three-season mango. Particularly, Hoa Loc sand mango is still sold for more than 20 thousand VND because of the severe crop failure and small planting area.
