As Thanh Nien reported, in the early morning of January 1, after tens of thousands of people flocked to the center of Ho Chi Minh City such as Nguyen Hue walking street and Bach Dang wharf park to count down and watch fireworks to welcome the new year 2024, many areas were "white" with... trash. These were tarps spread on the grass, plastic bags, plastic bags containing snacks, leftover food, peanuts, eggshells... All were left lying around, causing a loss of beauty on the streets and public works in the central area.
Bach Dang Wharf Park is full of trash after the New Year fireworks display ended.
Putting all the trash in a plastic bag and then taking it away, Ms. Hong Nhung (34 years old, living in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that it was the trash her family used when they "went on a picnic" in the evening at Bach Dang wharf park to watch fireworks.
"The fireworks this year were extremely beautiful, brilliant, and eye-catching. But after the fireworks were over, everyone saw that the trash was piled up and messy, making it extremely unsanitary. I think a civilized person is someone who knows how to clean up their own trash. I cleaned up my own trash and tried to find a trash can around here to throw it away, but it was full. I will find another trash can," said Ms. Nhung.
Mr. Hao (19 years old) also said that because he was frugal, he did not buy tarps or too much food or drink while waiting to watch the fireworks. Pointing to the empty glass of water he was holding, he said he would take it and throw it away. Looking at the area around Bach Dang Wharf Park filled with trash, he said that if people were more aware, it would help the environmental sanitation workers have less trouble.
"I often go to crowded events like this and see people littering everywhere. I don't dare to remind anyone, only my friends and relatives. But I think this is basic, everyone needs to know and be aware of it," the young man said.
Too poor awareness
Thanh Nien readers criticized the lack of awareness of many festival-goers when they littered.
"Knowing that fireworks are beautiful, knowing that the landscape is beautiful, but many people do not know that littering is humiliating themselves in front of beauty," Minh Do, a member of the Board of Directors, was indignant. Sharing the same opinion, Tuyen Ngo, a member of the Board of Directors, commented: "If you say that many Vietnamese people are not aware, you say this and that, but looking at the workers cleaning up all that trash, where is the awareness?"
And BD Kim Vui wrote: "Our country will take a long time to develop if a large part of the population lacks awareness. After a festival, the place is automatically filled with trash. When it rains heavily, people try to push trash down the drain, when there is a market, people try to throw trash on the spot or any canal near the market is full of trash and trash.Educating people is very important."
"Some people's awareness is too bad. They are selfish and only care about their own beauty, and don't care about public property being dirty. If you know how to appreciate beauty, you should also know what it means to be cultured and behave in a civilized manner. These events mostly gather young people, but this level of awareness is very worrying," said Do Tan, Director of the Board of Directors.
The law must be stricter.
Many opinions say that the law must be strict to gradually create habits and awareness among people.
"If there were prohibition signs and laws like Singapore, everything would be different. There is national consciousness, but people have tried to forget it because of their way of thinking: their land, their rivers, their roads... we just let them litter. If they litter in their house, who will say anything? Don't blame education in schools or families. If the laws become strict, everything will be different," said Dai Thong frankly.
Similarly, BĐ Tiến Lộc commented: "We have the Law on Environmental Protection, but how many people are punished for littering? Therefore, those who lack awareness are not afraid. I think that the handling of violations of the law needs to be more specific, more detailed and have a stronger deterrent effect. If awareness is poor, the law must be strict. Don't rely on their awareness, but use the law to regulate their behavior."
"If the law is strict, society will be better. Those who litter indiscriminately will be fined heavily and must also do community service. Many Vietnamese people who go abroad strictly follow the laws of the host country and dare not litter because they are heavily fined. Meanwhile, when they return to Vietnam , everything is the same because our laws are not strict," said Khanh Doan frankly.
Money can't buy consciousness, living selfishly without thinking about others.

It would be better to charge people for littering. Too much littering at the fireworks show.
Chau Ngo
Do litterers feel embarrassed knowing that there are volunteers to pick up the trash they have thrown?
