I was told I was crazy to study education.
Five days after his graduation ceremony, Trinh Quang Thach (born in 2001) was still happily looking at his excellent diploma. Although he knew he was the student with the highest GPA in class 69, Hanoi National University of Education, Thach was even more surprised when it was the highest score in the history of the faculty.
"When I chose to study Geography Education, many friends told me 'I was crazy to study this major' and advised me to choose majors related to economics , finance...", said the new graduate from Da Nang .
Male student Trinh Quang Thach.
Thach set his goal of becoming a teacher since he was young. His inspiration was his homeroom teacher, who taught profound literature lessons and was always attentive to her students.
In junior high school, when exposed to Geography, he realized that this was a subject he wanted to pursue and explore. An important milestone in grade 9, under the guidance of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thao, a Geography teacher at Ly Thuong Kiet Junior High School (Da Nang), Thach chose to take the exam to enter the Geography specialized class at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted.
"The path that led me to the "most precious of all precious professions" was sown and nurtured in the specialized class of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted. In grade 12, I won second prize in the national Geography competition, thanks to which I was admitted directly to Hanoi National University of Education," the male student recalled.
During his first days in Hanoi, the new student with a strong Da Nang accent felt bewildered and lost. Thach chose to stay in the dormitory so that his family could feel secure and he could get to know and exchange experiences with his friends and seniors at school.
Graduated 3.5 years early
With a GPA of 3.98/4.0, Trinh Quang Thach got A's in almost all subjects. According to him, to achieve high academic results, you need to plan and manage your time well, clarifying the question "what can you learn after a subject?".
Thach took a photo with his family at his college graduation ceremony.
In the morning, he goes to school according to the faculty's schedule, and in the afternoon, he goes to the library to read more books. Before taking the exam, Thach makes his own outline, builds a set of questions for that subject, and then answers them himself. Thanks to that, when taking the exam, the male student knows for sure where the questions are, and what knowledge he should focus on instead of studying randomly.
However, Thach also admitted that he often "leaves the test at the last minute", only starting to work on the outline a week before the exam, studying day and night.
During the summer, Thach rarely went home or went out. He enrolled in extra classes to speed up his graduation. Thanks to that, in February 2023, he completed the program and graduated early with a degree in Geography Education.
Thach also participated in scientific research and won first prize in scientific research at the school level and an encouragement prize at the Ministry of Education and Training level with the research topic of sustainable development education.
After graduating, Thach chose to work at FPT Secondary School (Da Nang). He also plans to continue studying to improve his IELTS score to 7.0 to apply for a scholarship to study abroad.
Rare phenomenon of Pedagogical school
Ms. Nguyen Thi Khanh Duyen - Thach's mother was moved by her son's unexpected graduation achievement. 4 years ago, when her son announced that he wanted to go to Hanoi to study, she was stunned.
The distance from Da Nang to Hanoi to study was too far, and she had no relatives, so Ms. Duyen did not agree with Thach's choice. Thach stayed up all night, persistently explaining to his mother to understand and support him. Thach's "stubbornness" made his mother accept.
During his time studying in Hanoi, Thach rarely came home, and mother and son could only care for and ask about each other over the phone every day. The day Thach received his university diploma was also the first time Duyen had been to Hanoi. Seeing her son standing on the podium receiving his excellent diploma, Duyen was overwhelmed with emotion.
Trinh Quang Thach, representative of K69, presented flowers to thank Professor Nguyen Van Minh at the graduation ceremony.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Minh, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, said that he first met Thach at the graduation and university degree awarding ceremony on June 9. The male student impressed Mr. Minh with his enthusiasm and deep love for the teaching profession. That was clearly shown through Thach's speech at the graduation ceremony.
In addition to his excellent graduation score, the Principal of Hanoi Pedagogical University assessed that Thach had expertise, logical thinking and the most important quality he saw in this student was "professional passion, true love for the teaching profession".
"These three factors are very important to a true teacher, and they all come together in Thach," he said, adding that this was the reason he decided to invite the student to stay at the school to continue studying and researching.
Dr. Nguyen Quyet Chien, Head of the Department of Geography Education, Hanoi National University of Education, shared that right after completing the undergraduate program (February 2023), the department invited Thach to stay and work and continue to study to improve his qualifications. "The mark after 3.5 years of studying at the Department of Geography is very clear, rarely any student can do that, even in previous courses," he commented.
