TP - Candidates who are admitted but do not enroll in school is no longer a strange phenomenon in every university admission season. This year, the number of candidates in this category is over 122,000, about 5,000 higher than last year.
According to MSc. Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of the Communications and Admissions Department, University of Commerce, a certain number of candidates who passed the entrance exam but did not enroll is normal and stable in recent years. Mr. Trung gave the reasons, including candidates with high scores who applied to study abroad; candidates' families' economic difficulties, changing their vocational training; candidates going to work abroad.
“This year, the rate of candidates confirming their admission to the University of Commerce reached over 97%. According to feedback from candidates, most of those who did not confirm their admission simply received the school’s admission notice to study abroad. Another reason was that they did not have enough finances to study,” said Mr. Trung.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh, Vice Principal of Phenikaa University, acknowledged that among the candidates who did not confirm their admission, many were admitted to a major they did not like and wanted to find an opportunity to study their favorite major in the supplementary admission round. Universities face two rounds of virtual candidates. Not only do the admitted candidates not confirm their admission, but there is also a large number of candidates who confirm their admission but do not come to officially enroll.
Mr. Khanh said that in recent years, the number of candidates who need additional admission is not large, because the majors for additional admission are no longer "hot" but are often majors that are difficult to recruit. The tuition fee issue is always an important consideration for candidates. "After the COVID-19 pandemic, people's lives have become more stable this year, the basic salary has increased but the standard of living has increased, so for candidates from other provinces to go to university, the cost has increased significantly. Many families and candidates themselves have to consider this choice," Mr. Khanh said.
Don't wait until next year
Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Principal of Duy Tan University, said that data from previous years and this year showed that the rate of candidates nationwide enrolling in the Ministry of Education and Training 's system only reached about 80 - 85% of the total number of successful candidates. In addition to tuition fees, students also need a living allowance to be able to attend university.
Meanwhile, the policy of allowing students to borrow 4 million VND/month can only be implemented after the candidate has become a university student and is low compared to the actual demand. Many high schools in the Central provinces have a very low rate of university students but a high rate of university admission. The university admission rate is the achievement of the high school where the candidate studies. This has created a virtual number of candidates admitted to universities every year.
Many candidates have neglected to confirm their admission online on the system. This is also one of the reasons why the Ministry of Education and Training decided to extend the admission deadline to 5:00 p.m. on August 31 for candidates. According to the previous plan, candidates had to complete their admission confirmation on the system by 5:00 p.m. on August 27.
Mr. Hai said that the additional admission round is an opportunity for candidates who did not pass their desired admission in the first round.
However, there are not many opportunities for additional admission, so candidates need to consider their options carefully. The reason is that there are not many schools that offer admission in the additional round, the quota is not much, and the additional admission score is at least equal to the first round or higher.
According to Mr. Hai, if candidates want to study at university, they should not wait until next year. Because from 2025, a completely new study and exam program will begin, and candidates cannot know in advance whether it will be favorable or difficult. Moreover, after a year, high school knowledge may be lost. For those with financial difficulties, if they have been admitted, Mr. Hai advises them to complete the admission procedures, then apply for a leave of absence to work and have enough money to return to normal study.
Many candidates have not thoroughly researched the tuition fees of the school/major they want to study. After being admitted, they discover that it is a high-quality major or a major taught mainly in English, and the tuition fees are much higher than the standard program, so they cannot afford to study and have to drop out. According to Professor, Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh, Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi , it is time to form the habit of borrowing money to go to school because it is an investment for the future.
