The dead and two survivors were evacuated from two landslide-hit villages in Tana Toraja district, South Sulawesi province on Saturday evening, said local disaster agency chief Sulaiman Malia.

“There have been 19 deaths, with four deaths in Makale South and 15 others in Makale village,” Malia told AFP on Sunday.
“We are still searching for other victims,” he said, adding that two people were still reported missing, possibly buried under the rubble after the landslide.
Malia added that Tana Toraja and surrounding areas have been “continually affected by heavy rainfall, especially in the past week which has been almost non-stop.”
He said heavy rains had eroded soil in residential areas on mountain slopes, leading to landslides that buried people's homes.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, a problem exacerbated in some places by deforestation, with prolonged torrential rains causing flooding in some parts of the island nation.
Flash floods and landslides on Sumatra island last month killed at least 30 people and many more remain missing.
