On the morning of May 22, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City announced that it had successfully removed a tonsil mass as big as a chicken egg that had caused a young man to snore for 20 years, at risk of apnea.
The patient is Mr. NTB (31 years old, living in Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City), who has had a snoring problem since childhood and wakes up feeling lethargic every morning. After many years of medical examinations, doctors determined that he had tonsillitis, prescribed him medication and also advised him to have surgery, but he delayed.
Doctors removed a giant tonsil mass, clearing the patient's airway.
Recently, his snoring has gotten worse, his snoring is so loud it makes it hard for his family to sleep. He often wakes up in the middle of the night, with a sore, dry mouth and throat.
At Tam Anh General Hospital, doctors discovered that he had grade 4 tonsillitis (the most severe level), at risk of sleep apnea, and needed immediate surgery to remove it.
The surgery went smoothly within 30 minutes, with little blood loss, little pain and surrounding damage thanks to the application of modern Coblator technology and Plasma scalpel. 3 hours after surgery, Mr. B. was able to eat soup and drink milk, and his throat function of speaking and swallowing was normal.
Master, Doctor Nguyen Thi Huong, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Tam Anh General Hospital, said that prolonged tonsillitis that is not completely treated will lead to dangerous complications such as high blood pressure and sudden death during sleep due to airway compression.
