First time in Central Vietnam: Patient gets artificial hip and femur replacement

For the first time in the Central Highlands region, doctors have successfully performed a hip replacement and more than half of the femur using the Megaprosthesis artificial joint replacement technique.

On June 24, Hue Central Hospital announced that it had successfully performed surgery to replace the hip joint and more than half of the femur using Megaprosthesis (a specialized artificial joint replacement technique) for the first time in the Central Highlands region.

The patient is Ms. PTX (71 years old, residing in An Cuu ward, Thuan Hoa district, Hue city), who had an artificial hip replacement 17 years ago, and had surgery again due to loose joints last year.

She often has pain when moving, has to use a cane to walk, and her quality of life is reduced.

Through examination, doctors discovered that she had extensive bone loss, fractures around the old hip joint, fractures of the bone fusion material, a misaligned leg axis and was shortened by more than 7cm - severe damage, with a risk of losing motor function if not treated promptly.

The patient was indicated to replace the entire hip joint and more than half of the femur with a special metal implant called Megaprosthesis.

The surgery lasted nearly 4 hours, performed directly by Dr. Nguyen Nguyen Thai Bao - head of the hospital's joint surgery and sports medicine department - and a team of specialists.

After surgery, the patient recovered well, was able to stand on his own and began the rehabilitation process.

According to Professor Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital, this is one of the most difficult techniques in the field of orthopedics, requiring interdisciplinary coordination and modern equipment.

Megaprosthesis is an effective treatment solution in cases of extensive fractures, complications after joint replacement or damage due to bone cancer, which previously often required amputation.

Hue Central Hospital is the first unit in the Central region to master this technique. "With Megaprosthesis, patients can move early, instead of having to spend a whole year on biological bone lengthening treatment as before," said Mr. Hiep.
