On November 15, the leader of Ninh Thuan General Hospital ( Khanh Hoa province) said that Mrs. TTH (93 years old, in Ninh Phuoc commune) was admitted to the hospital with complete loss of movement and sensation from her left arm to her left hand.
Through examination and paraclinical tests, CT angiography results showed complete occlusion of the left brachial artery due to thrombosis, causing acute limb ischemia. If not treated promptly, it will lead to necrosis and amputation.
Faced with the above situation, the team of the Interventional Cardiology Department of Ninh Thuan General Hospital performed angiography and balloon angioplasty to clear the left brachial artery using the digital subtraction angiography (DSA) system.
After the balloon angioplasty, blood flow was completely restored to the left forearm and hand. As a result, the patient's clinical symptoms were completely improved, the hand pulse was clear, the hand was rosy, and the hand was warm again.
After active treatment, the patient's left arm, forearm, and hand were not only preserved but also showed signs of good recovery of sensation and movement.
BSCKII. Nguyen Lac Viet - Head of Interventional Cardiology Department, Ninh Thuan General Hospital recommends that people should have regular health check-ups to detect early abnormalities of the heart and blood vessels.
Especially in the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, varicose veins, etc., regular monitoring by a specialist is needed to detect early and prevent the risk of blood clots and embolism.
When symptoms such as sudden pain, cold hands and feet, purple fingertips/toes appear, patients should go to a reputable medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid possible dangerous complications.
Acute limb arterial occlusion not only causes amputation-threatening symptoms but also affects the patient's life. Accurate diagnosis and emergency intervention to restore blood flow help increase the recovery rate and reduce the mortality rate caused by acute limb arterial occlusion.
