Influenza A usually starts suddenly with symptoms of fever, body aches, sore throat, dry cough, and prolonged fatigue.

According to traditional medicine, a person is healthy when their natural resistance is strong, the body's yin and yang are balanced, and blood and energy circulate well. When the body's vital energy is weakened due to stress, irregular eating, insomnia, or overwork, the body is susceptible to "evil energy" - that is, disease-causing factors from the environment such as viruses, bacteria, and cold winds - which invade and cause colds.

Therefore, Traditional Medicine emphasizes the principle of "prevention is better than cure", in which nourishing the body, regulating blood circulation, keeping warm and dispelling cold are key factors to prevent influenza A. In this article, we would like to introduce some traditional medicine methods commonly used to prevent and support the treatment of influenza A.

1. Massage and acupressure – Simple ways to prevent flu at home

Acupressure massage helps stimulate blood circulation, increase circulation, and enhance the body's defenses, especially useful in cold weather or when the weather changes erratically.

Can be done by yourself every day for 5-10 minutes following the instructions below:

Phong Tri acupressure point: Located in the hollow behind the neck, below the occipital bone. Use two thumbs to gently press for 1-2 minutes. Helps relax the head and neck area, reduce headaches, neck pain, and prevent colds.

Hegu point: Located on the back of the hand, between the thumb and index finger. Press and massage each side for about 1 minute to help increase resistance, reduce nasal congestion, headaches, and body aches.

Zusanli acupoint: Located about 3-4 cm below the knee, slightly outward. Use your fingers to press and massage each leg for about 1 minute, helping to strengthen the body, improve digestion and enhance immunity.

Massage the neck and upper back: Use your palms to gently rub the neck and shoulders from the inside out, then pat along the upper back. This helps to "warm up the meridians", warming the body, especially in the morning before going out in the cold.

Leaves are often used for steaming to help treat colds and flu.

2. Steam properly

Steam inhalation is a familiar folk method, but if done correctly, it is really effective in preventing and supporting the treatment of flu.

Full body steam bath: When you feel chills, tired, sneezing – you can steam early to prevent the flu from starting. Use easy-to-find leaves such as lemongrass, perilla, Vietnamese balm, lemon, ginger, mint, and basil.

Boil the mixture, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the warm steam deeply for 10–15 minutes. After steaming, dry your body, dress warmly, and rest in a draft-free room.

Effect: Dilates pores, pushes out cold air, reduces nasal congestion, clears sweat, relaxes the body.

Nasal and throat steam inhalation: People who are often in air-conditioned environments or in contact with crowds can use a pot of ginger water, lemongrass leaves, or eucalyptus or mint essential oils to gently inhale the warm steam for a few minutes every night.

Effect: Helps clean nasal mucosa, prevent virus adhesion, reduce sore throat and dry cough.

Note: Do not steam if you have a high fever, are dehydrated, or are exhausted; do not steam for too long as this may cause steam burns. People with chronic illnesses or pregnant women should consult a doctor before doing this.

Steaming regularly 1-2 times a week helps clean the respiratory tract, improve blood circulation, and is a useful method during flu season.

Ginger - honey - lemon tea: 3 slices of fresh ginger, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of honey, mixed with warm water. Helps warm the body, reduce cough, loosen phlegm, and has a mild antiseptic effect on the throat.

Onion and perilla porridge: When you have just sneezed or have a chill, eating a bowl of hot porridge cooked with green onions and perilla helps you sweat lightly, reducing the early symptoms of a cold.

Chicken soup with wolfberry and astragalus: Half a chicken, 10g wolfberry, 15g astragalus, stew until soft and eat both the liquid and the solids. Nourishes the body, increases resistance, helps people recover quickly after illness.

Ganoderma - licorice - chrysanthemum tea: 10g sliced lingzhi mushroom, 5g dried chrysanthemum flower (choose chrysanthemum type), 3-4 slices of dried licorice, 1.5 liters of water. Put lingzhi mushroom, chrysanthemum flower and licorice in a pot of water. Boil, then reduce heat and continue to boil for 30 minutes. Filter to drink. Drinking regularly every day helps purify the body, supports liver and lung function, very suitable for people who work a lot and are stressed.

These foods and drinks all strengthen the "vital energy", helping the body fight flu-causing agents without causing side effects.
