5 fruits that help control high uric acid levels

SKĐS - High uric acid is the main cause of gout and many other metabolic disorders. Some fruits contain biological active ingredients that can reduce the production and support the natural excretion of uric acid.

Certain fruits help control uric acid due to their properties such as being rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber and high water content. These factors help the body eliminate uric acid more effectively.

According to Dr. Jonathan Greer, a rheumatologist at Arthritis and Rheumatism Associates of Palm Beach (Florida, USA), medication is still the cornerstone of gout treatment, but choosing the right foods – including beneficial fruits – can help limit the risk of gout flare-ups.

High uric acid is the cause of gout.

Fruits that can help control uric acid:

1. Berries (blueberries, strawberries)

Berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and polyphenols, which can help reduce uric acid production. Compared to other fruits (like grapes), berries are also low in natural sugars and a good source of complex carbohydrates, which help flush toxins through the kidneys.

Berries can be added to breakfast yogurt, smoothies, or a simple fruit salad. A study published by the US National Institutes of Health found that high intakes of polyphenols found in berries were associated with lower blood uric acid levels.

2. Kiwi

Kiwi is a fruit that is particularly rich in vitamin C. Just one kiwi provides more vitamin C than two oranges. In a 1-cup serving, kiwi contains about 5 grams of fiber, which aids digestion and helps with weight control – important because being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for gout.

Although there is no direct research evaluating kiwi in gout patients, its high vitamin C content and very low purine content make kiwi a suitable choice to add to a diet to help control uric acid.

Kiwi skin is also rich in fiber and antioxidants. However, people with gout or kidney stones should not eat kiwi skin because of its high oxalate content. Oxalate is a natural compound found in many fruits and vegetables; the body usually eliminates it through urine. In people who are prone to kidney stones or are at risk of uric acid crystallization, oxalate can combine with calcium to form crystals, thereby increasing the risk of stones or gout flare-ups.

3. Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemons)

Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges are high in vitamin C, which has been shown to help reduce uric acid levels. Vitamin C improves kidney function and increases the excretion of uric acid through urine. Lemon juice, in particular, can help alkalize the body and reduce acidity. To maximize the benefits of these fruits, start your morning with lemon water or snack on an orange between meals.

A study published in the journal Science Direct found that lemon juice and/or water-soluble extracts significantly reduced uric acid levels in the blood while also hydrating the body.

4. Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps the kidneys function more efficiently and increases the excretion of uric acid. Bananas are also low in purine compounds that break down into uric acid, making them a good choice for people with gout or high uric acid levels.

A study published in PubMed Central tested different dietary options for patients with high uric acid levels, including bananas.

5. Pineapple

Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme with natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce joint pain and inflammation associated with gout. Pineapple also has a hydrating and cooling effect, supporting kidney health and uric acid excretion.

A study conducted by a global health science team published its findings and found that people who drank pineapple juice for 5-7 days had a significant reduction in gout pain.

Combining these fruits with adequate water intake and regular physical activity will further enhance the uric acid-lowering benefits. However, it is important to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or making any changes to your diet.
