Why do children get sick easily when the weather turns cold?

The cold rainy season makes children's nasal and throat mucosa dry easily, reducing the ability to "filter" dust and microorganisms. Respiratory viruses such as influenza, RSV, adenovirus... spread strongly in the community, while the immune system of children, especially under 6 years old, is not yet complete. Children going to school, living in closed spaces and close contact further increase the risk of infection.

5 Ways to Prevent Illness in Children During Cold Season

To prevent illness in children, it is important to build daily habits to strengthen the child's protective "barrier" instead of just reacting when the child is sick.

1. Keep warm "right - enough"

Children should be kept just warm enough, flexible according to the erratic weather. When indoors or in cool weather, dress your child in a sweat-absorbent inner shirt and a thin jacket if it is chilly. When it rains or is windy, put on a waterproof windbreaker and take it off when the weather warms up to avoid stuffiness. After your child has run and sweated, dry his back and chest and change his clothes immediately. Air-conditioned rooms should be set at 26 - 28°C, do not let the wind blow directly on the bed, and keep the humidity around 45 - 60% is best.

2. Balanced nutrition, prioritizing easy-to-digest foods

Immunity starts with a balanced meal: easily digestible protein, colorful vegetables and good fats help keep your child's respiratory mucosa healthy.

• Easily digestible protein: fish, eggs, lean meat,...

• Good fats: olive oil, canola oil; 1-2 meals of fatty fish/week.

• "Five-color" vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins A, C, E, and zinc: pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, oranges/tangerines, kiwis...

• Yogurt: supports intestinal microflora - the foundation of the immune system.

• Drink warm water many times, limit cold drinks and carbonated soft drinks.

• When children are tired and have poor appetite, give them small meals, do not force them to eat.

3. Wash your hands and clean your nose and throat properly

"Hand washing is a simple but very effective 'behavioral vaccine,'" emphasized Pharmacist Bao Chau Pharmacy.

• Children need to wash their hands before eating, after using the toilet, after coughing/sneezing or after touching public surfaces.

• Gently clean nose and throat with 0.9% saline solution when needed, do not overuse strong sprays.

• At the same time, train children to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, throw used tissues in a lidded trash can, and not share water cups, towels, or masks.

4. Get vaccinated properly and adequately, especially the flu vaccine

Children should be vaccinated according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health because this is a proactive measure, based on scientific research evidence. Seasonal influenza vaccine is one of the recommended annual booster shots. Parents need to monitor and complete the shots in the basic vaccination schedule for children.

5. Supplement micronutrients according to recommendations, appropriate for age

According to pharmacists at Bao Chau Pharmacy, when children's diets are not guaranteed, parents can consider supplementing some micronutrients according to age and instructions from medical staff, while prioritizing genuine products with clear origins.

Safety principles when supplementing:

• For support purposes only, not a substitute for medical treatment.

• Do not use high doses for a long time without permission.

• Children with underlying diseases/taking other medications should consult a doctor/pharmacist to avoid interactions.

• Choose a reliable distributor.

Micronutrient groups often considered during cold seasons:

• Vitamin D3: supports immune function and increases calcium and phosphorus absorption. Children with little exposure to sunlight should pay attention to supplementing the correct dose according to their age.

• Vitamin C: antioxidant, helps the body adapt to erratic cold weather

• Zinc: participates in the activity of immune cells and supports taste buds, helping children eat better.

• Probiotic: balances intestinal microflora, increases mucosal immunity, and helps support resistance.
