30 years of Hue Monuments Complex being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage

Over the past 30 years, Hue Heritage has constantly changed, revived with its inherent appearance in history and is growing with increasingly strong vitality. Hue has become the first locality in the country to have 2 tangible and intangible heritages of humanity.

On the evening of June 17, the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province solemnly organized a program to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Complex of Hue Monuments and the 20th anniversary of Nha Nhac - Vietnamese Court Music being recognized as a World Cultural Heritage by the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang attended.

On December 11, 1993, the Complex of Hue Monuments was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first world heritage site of Vietnam to be honored. On November 7, 2003, Nha Nhac - Vietnamese Royal Court Music was also listed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the first intangible cultural heritage of our country to be recognized.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue Province Nguyen Van Phuong said that in 1981, after researching and surveying the Hue Heritage Complex, Mr. M'Bow - the then Director General of UNESCO issued an appeal to save Hue's cultural heritage, with the message "Hue Heritage is in a state of danger, standing on the brink of extinction and oblivion" and only "an urgent rescue" with the efforts of the Vietnamese Government and the international community can help the ancient capital of Hue escape from the above situation.

Hue heritage has been strongly revived in the past 30 years.

From the Central Government's viewpoint on culture and after the appeal of the UNESCO Director General, this is a period of time that has witnessed positive changes in the preservation and conservation of Hue heritage; hundreds of relics have been restored, renovated and embellished, including many works of typical value. Intangible cultural heritages have also been focused on research, conservation and effective promotion. The appearance of Hue Heritage is constantly changing, gradually reviving to its inherent appearance in history and is reaching out with increasingly strong vitality, helping Thua Thien - Hue step out of oblivion to become the first locality in the country to have 2 tangible and intangible heritages honored by UNESCO.

“The province acknowledges and highly appreciates the positive contributions of domestic and foreign groups and individuals to the restoration, protection and promotion of Hue’s cultural heritage. We hope that we will continue to receive more attention, direction and support from the Central Government, localities, international organizations, and friends from near and far, so that the conservation and promotion of the heritage values ​​of the ancient capital of Hue will reach new heights, contributing to making Thua Thien - Hue province a centrally-governed city with cultural, heritage, ecological, landscape, environmentally friendly and intelligent characteristics,” said Mr. Phuong.

Also at the ceremony, Ms. Miki Nozawa, acting Chief Representative of UNESCO in Vietnam, said that UNESCO respects and highly appreciates the close cooperative relationship with Thua Thien - Hue province in recent times. The work of preserving the relics of the ancient capital has been promoted with a high spirit of determination and achieved many great results.

“In the past 30 years, this world heritage site has transformed with extremely positive results after many investment and reinvestment projects for conservation. The Complex of Hue Monuments has become one of the most effectively preserved relic sites in terms of both structure and other intangible heritage items. Hue Monuments is a successful example in Vietnam and in the region,” said Ms. Miki Nozawa.

The art program of the night had the theme "Heritage of the Ancient Capital, Memory & Transmission", with the participation of 9 domestic and international art troupes, nearly 450 artists, many attractive and unique performances were performed.

Hue Monuments Conservation Center - the unit assigned to preserve, conserve and promote the cultural heritage values ​​of the Ancient Capital was awarded the title of Excellent Unit in the emulation movement by the Government.

The 30th anniversary of the Complex of Hue Monuments and the 20th anniversary of Vietnamese Court Music being recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site took place over 3 days (from June 16-18), a series of special activities that were elaborately organized, comprehensively assessing the achievements and journey of preserving and promoting the values ​​of world cultural heritage in Thua Thien - Hue province over the past decades, towards a new journey, a journey of sustainable development, international exchange and cooperation in promoting the values ​​of cultural heritage with countries around the world.

Also on this occasion, Thua Thien - Hue province will launch the "Hue Heritage Conservation Fund". The Fund's motto is to operate not for profit with the desire to preserve and promote the value of Hue heritage and culture according to the general direction of the Party and State; bring cultural and historical values ​​to the people, tourists and communities at home and abroad in a deeper way; contribute to promoting economic growth, enhancing the image and position of Thua Thien - Hue province in particular and of Vietnam in general in the international arena.

Up to now, Thua Thien - Hue is the only province in Vietnam as well as in Southeast Asia with 7 heritages recognized by UNESCO, including 5 heritages of Hue alone (Complex of Hue Monuments - 1993 - Tangible heritage, Nha Nhac - Vietnamese Royal Court Music - 2003 - Intangible heritage, Nguyen Dynasty Woodblocks - 2009 - Documentary heritage, Nguyen Dynasty Royal Records - 2014 - Documentary heritage, Poetry on Hue Royal Architecture - 2016 - Documentary heritage) and 2 shared heritages with other localities (The art of Bài Chòi in Central Vietnam and Practice of the worship of the Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms of the Vietnamese people)
