According to the Election Commission of Thailand, 99% of the votes have been counted. Preliminary results show that the main opposition parties have taken the lead in the May 14 election.
According to Reuters, the Move Forward Party of politician Pita Limjaroenrat and the Pheu Thai Party of Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra (daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra) are taking turns winning the most seats in the House of Representatives after the election.
According to Reuters calculations, the two would win more than three times the number of seats held by the Palang Pracharat (People's State Power Party) and the military-backed United Thai Nation Party.
Move Forward's 42-year-old leader Pita Limjaroenrat called the election result "impressive" and promised to stay true to the values his party set when forming the government . Mr Limjaroenrat added that he was ready to form a coalition with Pheu Thai, but still aimed to become prime minister.
Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra congratulated the Move Forward Party on its election success, but said it was too early to discuss coalitions. “The voice of the people is the most important,” the 36-year-old leader said.
Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University, said the rise of the Move Forward Party represents a major shift in Thai politics . “Move Forward is taking the game to the next level with institutional reform. It is the new battlefield in Thai politics ,” Pongsudhirak said.
The results of the total number of seats in Thailand's lower house are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. However, winning a majority in the lower house does not mean becoming Thailand's leader. The position of Thai prime minister will be chosen at a joint session in July.
