This is the fifth consecutive year that AI Day has been held, becoming the leading annual scientific conference in the field of AI in the world and in Vietnam. The event also introduced to the public for the first time an interesting Vietnamese AI project called "PhoGPT".

AI Day is an annual event co-organized by VinAI Artificial Intelligence Research and Application Company (part of Vingroup ) and New Turning Institute, with the support of the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Innovation Center (NIC).

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment , Tran Duy Dong, along with more than 30 leading experts, professors, and scientists in the field of artificial intelligence from around the world, as well as over 100 business representatives and 1500 guests from the technology, manufacturing, and fabrication sectors both domestically and internationally. In addition, the event featured major partners such as Intel, AWS, Elsa Speak, Do Ventures, AMD, Lenovo, Trusting Social, Google, VinFuture Prize, New World Saigon Hotel, NIC, Sovico Group, Vietjet Air, Vietsuccess, VietAI, and The Global City.

Taking place over two days, December 5th and 6th, 2023, at The Global City, AI Day 2023 included four main discussion sessions with significant impact on many fields: “The Future of Big Language Models (LLMs)”; “Reshaping the Vision for the Future of Artificial Intelligence”; “The Global Impact of GenAI Generating Artificial Intelligence”; and “The Potential of GenAI in the Southeast Asian Economy”. In particular, GenAI generating AI was a hot topic, attracting attention due to its practicality and functionality. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to experience AI technology features and products at the VinAI booth and those of the sponsors.

At the event, Dr. Bui Hai Hung - General Director of VinAI - said: “AI Day 2023 is the largest Artificial Intelligence Day that VinAI has co-organized in the past 5 years, with the presence of the world's best minds in the field of AI. This year, VinAI and the New Turning Institute are co-organizing AI Day 2023 with a focus on GenAI, which is expected to be a bridge connecting Vietnamese intelligence with future advancements. This is also the top mission and goal of Artificial Intelligence Day each year, aiming to help the Vietnamese AI community develop and reach out to the world.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tran Duy Dong (Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment) emphasized: “We are even more confident that AI will be one of the fields where Vietnam has great potential for strong development and will soon catch up with the world's level. The Ministry of Planning and Investment will always support and accompany the AI community in particular and the science and technology community in general to develop a comprehensive and dynamic innovation ecosystem, contributing to the overall development of the country.”

At AI Day 2023, VinAI officially announced its first open-source research project on a large-scale language model specifically for Vietnamese, called "PhoGPT." The project aims to develop models similar to ChatGPT for the Vietnamese language and culture. PhoGPT boasts superior understanding and writing style compared to previous generations of language technologies. The model is also trained from scratch using a Vietnamese dataset, independent of any other global models, ensuring mastery of this advanced core technology for Vietnam.

"PhoGPT" is an open-source project, following the trend of large-scale open-source programming languages worldwide such as Meta's Llama or Mistral, developed to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Comparing the PhoGPT-7B5-Instruct version with the closed-source ChatGPT (GPT-3.5-turbo) and other open-source models shows that PhoGPT ranks second only to ChatGPT in most evaluation categories. The PhoGPT development team is continuing to improve the model and will expand the project to other languages, especially those in Southeast Asia.

According to Precedence Research, spending on AI hardware is rapidly increasing, from $43 billion in 2021 to potentially $248 billion by 2030. This figure has become a major concern for manufacturers. Understanding the impact, VinAI has invested in optimizing AI algorithms, minimizing waste. Optimizing AI models allows VinAI to design AI models with better hardware utilization while maintaining accuracy, immediately significantly reducing hardware investment costs and cloud computing operating costs for customers. Optimized AI models will also occupy less memory and consume less power, thereby reducing environmental emissions.

After five consecutive years of organizing AI Day in Vietnam, the innovations in program content and the participation of leading global "AI superstars" have affirmed the growth and continuous efforts of VinAI – a pioneer and connector that brings together the brightest talents of the Vietnamese AI community to meet and exchange ideas with colleagues around the world.
