After a week of discussions on the issue of transforming the global food system, the 3rd World Food Forum (WFF) concluded on October 20 at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu appreciated the discussions on agri-food system transformation, stressing the importance of following through on the discussed recommendations.
He said countries need to sustain efforts to leverage science and innovation to transform agriculture and food systems.
Also within the framework of the forum, delegates discussed the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital tools to help farms in less developed countries become more sustainable.
Speaking at a discussion on the topic, Khuat Dong Ngoc said that AI is a tool to transform the agricultural, food and rural development systems.
At the Science and Innovation Forum, speakers highlighted the role of applying smart technology in land and water management, climate change and ensuring sustainability.
Countries need to develop and strengthen integrated information systems to address urgent multi-sectoral challenges and ensure that these systems are accessible to all, especially farmers who are the caretakers and protectors of natural resources, the FAO Director-General said.
For her part, the Chair of the Intergovernmental Technical Committee on Land, Rosa Poch, said that it is necessary to raise public awareness of current challenges, apply sustainable measures, monitor soil quality and use plants adapted to changing ecosystems.
Similarly, Federico Truco, CEO of Bioceres Crop Solutions, believes that integrating technological and business innovations can play a key role in preserving ecosystems.
The WFF Forum, which began on October 16 on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of FAO, attracted 5,000 people from around the world to attend in person, along with more than 20,000 online participants.
Key events within the forum include the WFF Global Youth Forum, the FAO Science and Innovation Forum and the FAO Joint Investment Forum.
