Bruno Fernandes is the leader in MU's midfield. |
However, after four friendly matches at the beginning of the season, there is a reality that is causing unease in the hearts of fans: the midfield problem has not been solved, and the most expected pair - Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo - have not been used together once.
During the tour in the US, Amorim showed no fear of experimentation. He changed 18 starting positions across four matches, giving many players opportunities.
Bruno, Mainoo cannot play together
But in the midfield, rotation is somewhat limited. Only two central midfield duos have been tested: Bruno - Casemiro and Mainoo - Ugarte. And the seemingly perfect duo in terms of creativity and energy - Bruno and Mainoo - have never played together.
Did Amorim have a choice, and it did not include both?
Against West Ham, Ugarte and Mainoo produced an impressive display: high pressing, steady tempo, and proactive ball movement. But just a few days later, things fell apart against Everton – a match in which Ugarte repeatedly lost possession and was outplayed physically.
The Uruguayan midfielder's direct mistake led to the goal, thereby once again raising doubts: does he have the ability to play at Premier League level, beyond his defensive ability?
Mainoo - meanwhile - showed a maturity that is rare for a 19-year-old. The Englishman is comfortable playing in the No. 8 role, willing to receive the ball in tight spaces and launch risky passes forward.
He is considered a gem that needs to be polished, even a factor that can replace Casemiro in the long term. But to have a chance to play, Mainoo needs to be paired properly.

Mainoo is a good rhythm player, but not a suitable card for defensive duties. |
The problem is that Fernandes seems to be being drafted back into midfield, after the No. 10 position was given to new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. This would leave the midfield creatively rich but defensively vulnerable.
Fernandes, as we all know, is a player who always looks for space to get forward and make decisive passes. He is not a holding midfielder, and is not good at cutting in from a distance.
Pairing Fernandes with Mainoo would mean Amorim would be trading solidity for attacking rhythm. And if the Portuguese coach has not tried the pairing even once in the friendlies, it is understandable that he is not willing to gamble.
Time does not wait for MU
Meanwhile, Casemiro - who used to be the mainstay of the midfield - is losing form and pace. Ugarte is not reliable enough in possession. Mason Mount is still struggling with form and fitness.
With just one friendly against Fiorentina to finish the pre-season, and United still without the ideal midfield duo to start the new campaign against Arsenal, it is understandable that Amorim is urging the club to sign another midfielder before September 1.
But to find a player who can defend well, launch attacks well, and adapt quickly - that is not simple, and certainly not cheap.
Amorim is still stuck in the middle. |
Ruben Amorim is playing a risky game with his midfield. He sees weaknesses in the current options, but is reluctant to put his faith in risky combinations.
Fernandes - Mainoo may be the duo that fans want to see, but they are not the pair Amorim is ready to use. And when trust is not placed, it can be understood that: MU is still looking for a true backbone in the midfield.
