India plans to spend nearly $3.7 billion to fence its 1,610-km border with Myanmar over about 10 years to prevent smuggling and other illegal activities.
According to India's The Hindu newspaper, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said the government has decided to build a fence along the 1,643-km border with Myanmar. According to Shah, to facilitate better monitoring, a patrol line along the border will also be paved. A 10-km stretch in Moreh, Manipur state, in particular, will be reinforced.
According to Mr. Shah, the Indian government is reviewing India's Free Movement Regime (FMG) agreement with Myanmar and will soon end free movement into India.
A government committee approved the cost of the fence in early March, which is now awaiting approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet. The fence and adjacent road will cost nearly 125 million rupees ($1.5 million per kilometer), more than double the 55 million rupees per kilometer cost of a border fence with Bangladesh built in 2020 due to the difficult terrain.
