India: Bus plunges into ravine, 12 people killed

According to India Times, at least 12 people were killed and 15 others injured when a passenger bus plunged into a nearly 15-meter deep ravine in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

Police said the accident occurred on the evening of April 9 local time in Durg district of Chhattisgarh state. There were about 40 people in the bus at the time. The victims were all workers of a local liquor factory who were on their way home after work. The injured have been taken to hospital. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “The bus accident in Durg, Chhattisgarh is extremely sad. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the incident. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is working to help the victims in every possible way.”

Also on X network, President Droupadi Murmu shared: “The news of many people losing their lives in a bus accident in Durg district of Chhattisgarh is very sad. My deepest condolences to all the bereaved families! I pray for a speedy recovery of the injured.”
