Google has just rolled out a design update for the Maps app on Android thanks to changes from Android 16's Material 3 Expressive interface. While the changes aren't huge, they should provide a more intuitive, easier-to-use experience — especially for Pixel 10 users and compatible devices.
Notable design changes
Core function buttons like Directions, Start, Ask (Gemini), Save, and Share are now permanently “pinned” to the bottom menu at the bottom of the screen. Previously, if you scrolled down to the information about a place, you would have to scroll back up to use these functions—something that has now been fixed.
The location information menu has also been refreshed: information snippets are placed in rounded light gray frames that stand out more against the white background — making them easier to see and clearer to use.
The entire Maps interface in the update focuses on consistency with the Material 3 Expressive design style — softer, more rounded, less of a “flat” feel.
Update status and eligible devices
This design update has already started rolling out in the beta version of Google Maps (version ~25.37.x). Some Pixel 10 Pro users can already see some changes, but it's not yet fully widespread.
Not everyone will see the changes right away—if you haven't updated or aren't in the beta, it may take a while for the design update to hit your device.
Practical effects and user experience
While the changes don't directly impact navigation or location search, they do:
Pinning important function buttons at the bottom makes operations faster, especially when users are viewing long information about a location (e.g. reviews, images, ratings…).
Rounded design, light gray background helps reduce the "glare" of the bright white interface, easier to see in strong light conditions or in cars.
In terms of overall experience, such small changes are often not immediately noticeable, but over time the convenience becomes more apparent.
Note when using and waiting for update
If you want to try out the new design right away, you can join the Google Maps beta if it’s available for your device. However, beta versions often come with minor bugs and aren’t as stable as the official release.
Check your version of Maps — if the new feature isn't available yet, check the Play Store for updates, or check out the Google Maps beta.
The change will gradually roll out to all Android users — not just the Pixel 10 line. But rollout times may vary by region and individual device.
The Material 3 Expressive update for Google Maps on Android 16 may not be revolutionary, but it’s a subtle and much-needed update that makes the user experience more pleasant, intuitive, and convenient. Little touches like the always-visible function button at the bottom of the menu or the more legible information pane pay dividends in real-world use. If you’re running Android 16 or a compatible device, this is an upgrade worth checking out.
