Google has just introduced a series of new features that help users turn Google Maps into a more “personal” navigation and exploration tool than ever. More than just a navigation application from point A to point B, Google Maps now also offers many interesting customizations, making each journey more unique and convenient.

Create your own itinerary with screenshots
Users can create a list of favorite places by simply taking screenshots of posts, comments or pictures of the places they want to go. The application will automatically recognize the name of the place in the photo and suggest saving it to a customized itinerary list.

The feature is now available on iPhones running iOS 26.1 Beta 2 and will be coming to Android soon. Users just need to go to the “You” tab, select the Screenshots list and allow Google Maps to access the photo library. The app will then notify you whenever it detects a location from a photo and allow you to add it to the list.

Set emojis for favorites list
Another cool feature is the ability to use emojis to title your lists. For example, your burger list could be titled with a 🍔, or add some fun with a 🤢 if you had a bad experience. This makes managing and finding your list more vivid and memorable.
Personalize your route and departure time
Google Maps also helps users plan their trips more accurately. You can set a departure time or arrival time, and the app will automatically calculate and send a notification when you need to leave.
Additionally, users can assign separate icons to Home and Work addresses, making navigation faster and the interface more intuitive.

Navigate in style
Not only does Google Maps optimize routes, it also allows you to change the moving vehicle icon – replacing the familiar green dot with many other funny images. Users can also choose to avoid highways, toll booths or crowded routes.
When searching for a restaurant or cafe, you can use price filters, choose locations that are open, or choose a location that suits your taste from American, Japanese, to Thai. It's a useful tool to save time and find the right choice for your budget.

A “smarter” Google Maps thanks to Gemini
According to Google, as Gemini artificial intelligence is integrated more deeply into the application, personalizing the journey will become easier and smarter. Maps will not only guide the way but also suggest stops, places to have fun, eat, help users "explore the world in their own way".
These new updates make Google Maps a comprehensive assistant – not just for navigation, but also for preserving memories, suggesting experiences, and helping you explore every corner in your own style.
