The Angolan Ministry of Health and partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), responded to the outbreak by rapidly detecting cases, deploying emergency response teams and mobilizing community participation.
Since the vaccination campaign launched in February, about one million people have had access to the vaccine.
However, despite the measures to respond to the epidemic, Angola still recorded a mortality rate of 3.2%, much higher than the WHO standard of less than 1% to assess the effectiveness of treatment at medical facilities as well as adequate and timely patient management and care.
Notably, the outbreak affects all ages, especially those under 20.
Angola previously suffered a major cholera outbreak in 2006, which killed more than 2,700 people. Since then, there have been periodic outbreaks, especially during the rainy season.
At the regional level, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), more than 178,000 cholera cases were recorded in eastern and southern Africa from January 2024 to March 2025, with South Sudan and Angola facing the most severe outbreaks.
