Effects of spicy foods on sinuses

VnExpressVnExpress11/05/2023

Spicy, pungent foods such as chili peppers, raw garlic, onions, and mustard can irritate the sinuses, helping to temporarily thin mucus.

Sinus congestion occurs when the sinuses are swollen, inflamed or infected due to flu, allergies... The disease causes symptoms such as headache, pressure and pain in the face, stuffy nose. Doctors often recommend that patients drink enough water; supplement with antioxidants to fight free radicals that contribute to chronic sinusitis. Increasing colorful vegetables and fruits such as pumpkin, papaya, sweet potatoes, kiwi... is also helpful. In addition, eating spicy, pungent foods also helps soften mucus, making the nose more open.

Chili : Chili contains a lot of capsaicin, which helps soften mucus and clear the nose. Capsaicin is also known as a natural pain reliever. When eating chili, the body reacts with symptoms of runny nose and watery eyes. This action helps release clogged mucus, opening the nasal airways. People can eat chili directly or use it when cooking. You should eat spicy food moderately according to your tolerance, eating too much can lead to stomach pain and indigestion.

Raw onions : Onions contain a chemical compound called quercetin, which acts like an antihistamine to reduce inflammation and congestion.

Garlic : Garlic contains allicin, ajoene and s-allyl cysteine, which are compounds that reduce inflammation and help thin mucus. Garlic also contains sulfur compounds that are rich in antibacterial and antifungal properties, which help reduce inflammation and fight viruses. People can use garlic when preparing food, drink pickled garlic water or use roasted garlic mixed with water. The disadvantage of eating raw garlic is that it causes bad breath. However, raw garlic retains its spiciness well and is more effective in making the nose runny.

Ginger : Ginger has antioxidants that help reduce pain and swelling. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help relieve allergies, discomfort, and sinus pain. Adding ginger to your meals can help relieve discomfort from sinus infections, headaches, and nasal congestion. Ginger tea with a little honey and warm water can help relax and clear your nose.

Spicy foods are not a cure for sinus-related symptoms, but are only a supportive solution to relieve pain, nasal congestion, and provide temporary relief. On the other hand, spicy foods also cause side effects. According to the US National Library of Medicine, spicy foods can be the cause of sneezing. For some people, spicy foods can easily cause non-allergic sinusitis. People should observe and record their food consumption diary. If spicy foods aggravate sinus discomfort, they should be limited. When suffering from sinus diseases, patients should limit tomatoes (containing histamine), chocolate, cheese, gluten, and bananas.

Other measures to help reduce and prevent sinus problems include rinsing your nose with saline or a specialized nasal wash; steaming with warm water; using a humidifier; not blowing your nose too hard; and elevating your head when sleeping.
