The 77th Cannes Film Festival has just awarded the highest prize, the Palme d'Or, to the romantic comedy Anora by director Sean Baker. The film tells the love story between a New York dancer (played by Mikey Madison) and a Russian politician (Mark Eydelshteyn). Their love becomes difficult when the man's family tries to separate the couple. The film has been described by critics as "stunning".

On stage to receive the award, director Sean Baker (his previous notable works include Tangerine   - 2015, The Florida Project - 2017...) said that this result was "unexpected". The American filmmaker thanked two cinematic monuments as his great inspirations, Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg. For the first time since Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life (2011), American cinema has had a work that won the Palme d'Or.

Director Greta Gerwig, president of the jury, said the jury decided to award Anora because "the film evokes classic cinema, like the structure of the work of filmmakers like Lubitsch and Howard Hawks. The film does something believable and extraordinary."

Before Anora , Neon's films were honored with the Palme d'Or such as Anatomy of a Fall (which won last year, 2023), Triangle of Sadness , Titane and Parasite . According to international sources, the company has not yet scheduled a release date in the North American market this year but expects to show the film next November.

The Best Actor award was given to Jesse Plemons in Kinds of Kindness , marking the second time that Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos' film was honored at the 2024 post-Oscar film awards.
