Apple's switch to USB-C on the iPhone 15 causes a lot of trouble

According to Engadget , although they share the same USB-C connection, they depend on other standards to regulate things like data speeds, power delivery, etc. And the way Apple implements USB-C on the iPhone 15 series is making things more complicated.

Apple's USB-C Debut on iPhones Is Making More People Confused

The first issue is that data transfers on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are limited to USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mbps), the same as the Lightning connection. Meanwhile, Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max as supporting "USB 3" data transfers at speeds up to 10 Gbps, which is about 20 times faster.

That's a big difference, and it's unclear why Apple would limit the iPhone 15 series to this. Additionally, Apple's use of "USB 3" to describe the transfer speeds on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max doesn't seem entirely accurate. USB 3.0 (which is not the same as USB 3) tops out at 5 Gbps, meaning Apple is using USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.2 Gen 2 on its new phones (both of which top out at 10 Gbps) and just labeling them USB 3 for simplicity.

This has started to confuse users, and it's one reason why the USB-IF organization wants companies to state their device data rates instead of citing USB version numbers.

Buying the right cable or adapter for your device will be another challenge. Currently, if you go to Apple’s website, click on the Accessories tab, choose to browse by product (in this case, iPhone), and select the Power & Cables section, you won’t find any reversible USB-C cables on that page. Instead, you have to go to the iPad or Mac section, where you can choose between a 1-meter reversible USB-C cable for $19, or a 2-meter one for $29.

More annoyingly, Apple doesn't provide specifications for the cable that comes with the iPhone 15 Pro, and it's most likely a 1-meter USB-C cable that's limited to USB 2 speeds.

It's also unclear whether the iPhone 15 will support USB Power Delivery with PPS (programmable power supply), which allows the device and charger to automatically adjust voltage for maximum speed and efficiency.
