The return match was supposed to be held in Nepal. But due to the unstable political situation there, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chose Thong Nhat Stadium as the home ground for Nepal Asia.
Therefore, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team received more encouragement from home fans to continue to defeat Nepal once again after winning 3-1 in the first leg at Go Dau Stadium.
Without Laken Limbu - a midfielder currently playing in Cambodia - due to a red card in the first leg, Nepal still did not hide their desire to win points against Vietnam. Coach Matthew Ross and his team's confidence caused many difficulties for the host Vietnam at Go Dau Stadium.
"In the match at Go Dau, the Nepalese players were still too inexperienced, such as the red card situation. Therefore, they need to learn from their experience for the return match. We have enough players and will fight more fairly," the Australian coach emphasized.
After the recent unconvincing performance, the starting lineup of the Vietnamese team in the rematch with Nepal promises to have many changes to play better.
Among them, center back Bui Tien Dung will definitely have to sit out as he has not been able to practice in the last two training sessions. He suffered a relapse of his back injury and had to leave the field after the first half of the first leg win over Nepal. Coach Kim Sang Sik will most likely give Nhat Minh a chance to replace him in the left center back position.
However, that is not the only change made by Mr. Kim in defense. Because goalkeeper Dang Van Lam may also have to sit out to make room for his juniors after playing uncertainly in the first leg. Trung Kien may be the main option, instead of Nguyen Van Viet, to prepare for SEA Games 33 at the end of the year.
But the defense is not a concern for coach Kim Sang Sik anyway, as Nepal's strikers are not a big threat. Fixing the attack is what gives Mr. Kim a headache.
In the first leg, the Vietnamese players had 25 shots, but only 10 were on target. Notably, the two decisive goals that brought victory to the Vietnamese team were scored by defenders Xuan Manh and Van Vi instead of the strikers.
The two expected strikers Pham Tuan Hai and Hai Long both played deadlocked against a weak defense and played defensively like Nepal. And perhaps coach Kim Sang Sik was forced to give the U23 strikers a chance to take the lead and find goals. Dinh Bac, Thanh Nhan and Khuat Van Khang were all ready for a resounding victory at Thong Nhat Stadium.
