On May 10, the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had successfully treated a special international child patient. That boy was SM (11 years old, Russian nationality) who had a serious traffic accident while traveling with his family in Nha Trang.
Severe wound infection, emergency wound debridement
Before being admitted to the hospital, baby SM had a traffic accident that caused extensive skin lacerations on the left shoulder, arm, wrist area, left pelvis, thigh, leg and ankle.
The baby was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, but his condition did not improve, so he was transferred to the City Children's Hospital.
Here, the infection in the child's left hand and left leg was quite severe, the wound peeled off the entire skin of the left leg, arm, thigh, and left leg, the child had a continuous fever of 39 - 40 degrees, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, the wound had a very unpleasant smell and a lot of pus, and was toxic.
Doctors quickly consulted and performed emergency surgery to clean the wound and use antibiotics. Initial cultures of wound pus and blood cultures showed gram-negative bacilli.
Regarding the treatment regimen, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien - Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital - said that the patient was placed on a continuous negative pressure wound cleaning system (VAC) and used biological gauze and advanced antiseptic solution.
At the same time, the patient was treated with intravenous feeding, protein solution infusion, electrolyte adjustment, acid-base imbalance, and pain relief. At the same time, he was consulted by specialists in nutrition, psychology, and rehabilitation...
After 10 days of treatment, the baby was alert, responsive, had pink lips, warm limbs, was breathing fresh air, had a clear pulse, the wound was dry, and there was little fluid seepage. Vital signs were stable, and the wound was continuously irrigated and suctioned.
The baby can communicate with nurses through language translation technology, and is mentally much better thanks to the support of psychological therapy.
According to the hospital, the challenge for this international child patient lies not only in medical technology, but also in language, culture, and the psychology of the child and his family, as they are all foreigners and do not speak Vietnamese.

Russian patient repatriated safely
Overcoming the treatment of a critical infection, baby SM's vital signs are temporarily stable. Part of the cost of treatment in Vietnam is supported by the hospital, however the baby needs long-term wound treatment.
Faced with this situation, the family expressed their desire to bring the baby back to Russia for further treatment. The hospital and the family contacted the Russian Embassy in Vietnam. Administrative procedures were quickly resolved even on holidays to coordinate and develop the safest travel plan for the baby.
Online consultations between doctors from the two countries have taken place. On April 23, Russian doctors and nurses were present at the city’s Children’s Hospital to conduct clinical examinations, verify records, and exchange expertise with Vietnamese doctors.
A specific plan was agreed upon by both parties to ensure that the wound would be taken care of during the flight, which was expected to last 12-14 hours. On the morning of April 24, the parties officially coordinated to put baby SM on the plane back home.
The entire medical transport process was carried out in accordance with international standards, under the close supervision of doctors from both countries and with special support from the Russian Embassy. The baby was brought onto the plane in a stable condition, ready to begin the next stage of treatment in his home country.
The City Children's Hospital believes that this event is not only a testament to a successful medical treatment, but also has profound significance in terms of foreign affairs. In the context of globalization, medicine is not only a field of human healing but also a spiritual bridge between countries.
In recent times, the hospital has received and successfully treated many foreign pediatric patients from various nationalities such as Japan, Korea, China, Myanmar, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, etc.
The hospital has established a process to support specialized treatment for international pediatric patients, from administrative procedures to the process of bringing the patients back to the country.
