According to Tom's Hardware , the new Nvidia App update, released with driver version 566.14 in November, has caused many users to experience reduced performance when playing games. The average frame rate in some games can drop by up to 15%, significantly affecting the user experience.
Nvidia was quick to respond to the issue and confirmed that the Game Filters and Photo Mode feature in the Nvidia App was to blame. “We have received reports of performance degradation related to Game Filters and are actively investigating. Users can disable this feature by going to Nvidia App Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters and Photo Mode, then restarting the game,” an Nvidia representative said.
Nvidia App offers a variety of features and tools with an easy-to-use interface design
Testing from Tom's Hardware shows a significant performance drop, with some cases resulting in graphics cards performing on par with lower-end models that cost hundreds of dollars less.
The Nvidia App was officially released after a long beta period, bringing features like 120fps AV1 recording and an on-screen information display (OSD). However, the bug once again highlights the problems that can arise when new software is deployed on a large scale. While some users have long since chosen to ignore the Nvidia App and similar GeForce Experience features, there are still a large number of users who appreciate the convenience of the app.
The temporary solution that Nvidia suggests is to disable Game Filters in the application settings, which should restore the frame rate to its previous state. This is a simpler and less risky solution than uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the old version. However, the community still expects Nvidia to release an official update soon to completely fix the problem.
