Yen Nhan village after the flood, dozens of houses were swept away

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Flash floods following storm No. 5 devastated the border commune of Yen Nhan (Thanh Hoa), with more than two dozen houses completely collapsed, many households losing their property, and many villages remaining isolated.

On the afternoon of August 28, reporters arrived at Yen Nhan commune and recorded that many villages were still littered with mud, trees and boulders blocking the paths. Houses were swept away by the flood, leaving only their foundations.

People are still in shock, many families have to take temporary shelters and wait for authorities to provide food and water.

Up to now, many villages are still isolated, traffic is cut off, and people's lives are extremely difficult.

Authorities had to cross dangerous landslides to bring supplies into the isolated area. The road leading to the village was blocked by landslides, leaving only small, slippery trails on many sections, with cliffs on one side and deep abysses on the other.

Many workers who were working far away heard that their village was flooded and rushed back. On the way, everyone was anxious, calling home but could not contact their relatives. The road was eroded, they had to walk, some crossed dozens of kilometers of slippery mountain passes, soaked in rain, just hoping to see their roofs soon, their parents, wives and children safe.

The house of Ms. Ha Thi Cuc (40 years old, Na Nghiu village) was completely swept away by the flood. She said: “At around 8 o'clock on August 26, when I was packing, the flood suddenly came. In just a few minutes, rocks and soil poured down from the mountain. We only had time to hug our children and run away, leaving all our belongings behind.”

Ms. Cuc’s family of 5 members is poor. Last June, she received 40 million VND from the State and borrowed money from relatives to build a house worth 100 million VND. The joy was not complete when, after only one month of moving in, the house was swept away by flood, all food and essential items were swept away. “Now we are penniless, no longer have a house to live in, the future is so bleak,” Ms. Cuc choked.

Not only Ms. Cuc's family, Mr. Tran Van Toi (Chieng village) also lost his entire grocery warehouse, his solid house was swept away by the flood, estimated damage of nearly 1 billion VND.

Next door, Mr. Vi Van Quang's newly built house also has large cracks and the foundation is severely eroded.

Many families were lucky to survive. Mr. Luong Van Hung (38 years old, Na Nghiu village) picked up the remaining belongings and tearfully recalled the scene of his son being swept away by mud: "I rushed into the mud to look for my son in despair, luckily I found him when the mud was up to my chest. I held my son up and couldn't breathe, afraid that I would lose him."

After the floodwaters receded, the village was littered with the remains of household items. A dented refrigerator lay abandoned in a pile of mud, muddy clothes were hung on the fence, and a few broken bed boards had drifted out to the stream bank.

On the wet ground, people tried to pick up every bowl and spoon that could still be used, gathering them together to make a temporary living.

Among the rubble, souvenirs such as children's teddy bears, family photo frames, children's books... were soaked and crumpled, making many people unable to hold back their tears.

According to the People's Committee of Yen Nhan Commune, the entire commune had 166 households damaged by floods, of which 22 houses were completely collapsed. The commune police urgently evacuated 123 households with 492 people to safety.

Currently, Yen Nhan commune is still without electricity, many places have lost phone signal, disaster relief and recovery work is being urgently deployed but still facing many difficulties due to traffic disruption.

National Highway 47 passes through the area with 16 landslides. Many villages such as Na Nghiu, Khong, and My are still isolated and can only be accessed by walking across the landslides. Currently, it is not possible to access them to fully assess the damage.

Ms. Le Thi Yen (born in 1966, Na Nghiu village) was unfortunately hit by rocks and soil, causing her leg to break. The road to the village was cut off, and the ambulance could not reach. The authorities and neighbors took turns carrying Ms. Yen across the landslides and slippery roads to get her out, in order to promptly bring the victim to safety and transfer her to the hospital for treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Kien, Head of Yen Nhan Commune Police, said that the authorities are doing their best to overcome the consequences and open roads to isolated villages. “In some places like Khong and My villages, we had to trek through the forest for more than 3 hours to bring food and water to supply, trying not to let people go hungry or thirsty,” he said.
