According to the representative of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, this year, the fruit and vegetable industry will certainly set a new record, expected to earn from 7.1 - 7.2 billion USD.

Fruit and vegetable exports - impressive numbers

In November 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports decreased, including durian, because the Central Highlands entered the end of the favorable season, while the Mekong Delta and the Southeast entered the unfavorable season. According to estimates, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in November 2024 reached 500 million USD, down 3.8% compared to the previous month, but still up 34.3% compared to the same period last year.

In the first 11 months of 2024, the export turnover of fruits and vegetables of our country reached about 6.66 billion USD, an increase of 28.2% over the same period last year. Thus, at the end of the first 11 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached an impressive number. The remarkable growth in the output of key fruits, combined with the effective exploitation of the Chinese market, has helped Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports achieve remarkable achievements in recent times.

Data from the General Department of Customs shows that durian contributed the most to the overall growth rate of the industry in the first 10 months of 2024, accounting for 49.11% of the total turnover, reaching over 3 billion USD, an increase of 45.7% over the same period last year.

In addition, the export turnover of many other types of fruits and vegetables increased, including: coconut (up 60.6%); banana (up 26.8%); mango (up 43.5%); jackfruit (up 21.3%); pistachios (up 40.4%); almonds (up 58.2%); watermelon (up 53.7)... On the contrary, the export turnover of dragon fruit and passion fruit decreased by 18.1% and 24.1% respectively.

In the first 11 months of 2024, our country's fruit and vegetable export turnover reached about 6.66 billion USD, an increase of 28.2% over the same period last year.

The report of the General Department of Customs shows that the Northeast Asian markets such as China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. account for nearly 80% of the total export turnover of the fruit and vegetable industry; the remaining 20% will be exported to the European, American, Middle Eastern markets, etc. Therefore, experts believe that the Northeast Asian market is very important for the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry.

To penetrate these markets, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that we also need to improve quality and avoid violations of pesticide residues. Then, we will dominate the export market.

With the support of the Government , ministries and branches in signing free trade agreements, protocols, etc., the export turnover of vegetables and fruits will increase. Evidence shows that Vietnam's durian exports were nearly 10 years behind Thailand's, but now we have surpassed Thailand. Or with bananas, previously we were only second or third in export to China, now we have risen to first place. Geographical location in Southeast Asia, 3,260km long East Sea coastline and tropical monsoon climate with high annual rainfall are favorable conditions for the cultivation industry, Vietnam has great potential to become one of the leading countries in the production and export of vegetables, flowers and tropical fruits in the regional and international markets.

Market outlook remains "bright"

According to the representative of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, this year, the fruit and vegetable industry will certainly have a new record. In 2022, the export turnover of fruits and vegetables will only reach 3.3 billion USD. Last year, we had a record of 5.6 billion USD, this year it is expected to earn from 7.1 - 7.2 billion USD. In the general "picture" of fruit and vegetable exports, there is a growth in turnover for each group of products compared to the same period last year.

Among them, durian has the highest growth. It is expected that this year, the export of this item will earn over 3.2 billion USD. Thanks to the increase of 1 billion USD in durian export compared to last year, the total export turnover of the whole industry has increased to over 7 billion USD.

As for products such as passion fruit, grapefruit, fresh coconut, frozen durian, these are new products that have just opened the market, businesses are still struggling with the issue of applying for growing area codes, packaging facility codes, and establishing relationships with foreign partners. In other words, businesses are currently in the preparation process. Some products such as grapefruit and coconut have exported the first shipments but not much. Next year, these products will be able to promote their advantages.

It is forecasted that fruit and vegetable exports in the last month of the year will face certain challenges due to the reduced supply of some key fruits. However, the high demand in the world market, especially China, along with trade agreements will be the driving force supporting exports.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen believes that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports still have many "bright opportunities" and expects the export figures to increase even higher in the coming years. Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development set a target of USD 5 billion for fruit and vegetable exports by 2025. However, in 2023, we recorded USD 5.6 billion and this year we expect to earn over USD 7 billion.
