Ensuring early winter crop production under adverse weather conditions

Việt NamViệt Nam23/08/2024

According to the plan, this year's winter crop will have more than 5,150 hectares of winter crops planted on 2-rice land, accounting for more than 63% of the total area. The heavy rains in the second half of July caused many areas of summer-autumn rice to be flooded, prolonging the growth and development period, especially the rice areas that had to be replanted. This has a certain impact on the planting season of warm-weather winter crops (accounting for 70% of the area).

According to the assessment of the agricultural sector, the whole province has more than 5,000 hectares of rice damaged by flooding, of which nearly 1,700 hectares must be replanted (over 70% damage). Along with that, some areas are partially affected by waterlogging, affecting the growth and development of rice plants.

Kim Bang district is the locality with the earliest sowing season for summer-autumn rice in the province. When it rains, the rice has taken root, turned green and entered the tillering stage. However, due to the large amount of rainfall in the area of nearly 500 mm, some rice areas have been flooded and waterlogged. According to calculations, the rice areas with waterlogged rice have been slowed down by 2-3 days. In localities with large areas of summer-autumn rice that have been flooded and suffered great damage, the production season has been delayed quite a bit, from 5-7 days, in some places more than 10 days.

Farmers in Liem Can commune (Thanh Liem) check the growth of winter-spring rice after replanting.

Binh Luc district has 1,550 hectares of rice damaged, mostly in localities with a high proportion of direct-sown rice and later planting than the general crop. There are localities in the district where direct-sown rice accounts for 80 - 90% of the area. Therefore, with the recent flooding, recovery and replanting are no longer needed for the early crop.

In Thanh Liem district, the rice area damaged by flooding is up to nearly 2,400 hectares, basically the production season of the winter-spring crop is delayed. Through actual field assessment, the whole district only has about 300 - 400 hectares of rice, scattered in localities, blooming before August 30, most of the remaining area blooming concentrated between September 15 - 25. Thus, the rice will be harvested after nearly 1 month (around October 13 - 23), there is no longer the season for the early winter crop (the latest planting time is from October 5 - 10).

According to Ms. Do Thi Thanh Nga, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Thanh Liem district, for the upcoming winter crop, the district plans to plant 450 hectares of various crops, mostly on 2-rice land. However, the seasonal rice crop is severely affected by flooding at the beginning of the crop, making it very difficult to implement winter crop production with early crops in the district. The department is calculating to expand the area of cold-loving, seasonal crops (potatoes, winter leafy vegetables).

To ensure the early production of the summer-autumn crop, freeing up land for planting warm-loving winter crops on 2-rice land, immediately after the flooding, the agricultural sector directed the localities on techniques for caring for the summer-autumn rice. Accordingly, farmers were informed and instructed on how to care for the newly flooded rice area. When the rice plants grew new leaves and new white roots were found, they were fertilized with additional chemical fertilizers (1-2 kg of urea + 2-3 kg of potassium fertilizer/360 m2 pole). In combination, farmers weeded and stirred up mud to bury the fertilizer deep in the soil, increasing oxygen to the topsoil, helping the rice roots grow quickly. The growth process of the rice plants was monitored, checked and prevented from pests and diseases in a timely manner so as not to affect the development of the rice plants. At the same time, localities needed to closely direct people to focus on quickly and neatly harvesting ripe summer-autumn rice and planting winter crops according to the motto "After harvesting summer-autumn rice, plant winter crops immediately".

With the flooding conditions at the beginning of this year's crop season, some areas planned for winter crops will certainly be affected. Localities need to proactively review, evaluate, and even rearrange production areas in places where winter-spring rice is grown to ensure the season and appropriate crop structure (selecting cold-loving crops that are still in season). This will help complete the proposed winter crop planting plan.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Nam, Head of the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Forestry (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development)

On the part of the people, they prepare well the conditions from the source of plant seeds to fertilizer materials... With the planned areas for winter crop planting, the possibility of harvesting the rice crop is slow, so they make pots for seedlings to wait in the field. This method helps to prolong the planting time while still ensuring the growth and development of the plants. Some places can use the method of sowing seeds (mainly soybeans) before harvesting the rice.

Discussing the impact of the summer-autumn crop season on the winter crop, Mr. Nguyen Hai Nam, Head of the Department of Crop Production, Plant Protection and Forestry (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: With the flooding conditions at the beginning of this year's summer-autumn crop season, some areas planned for winter-autumn crop will certainly be affected. Localities need to proactively review, evaluate, and even rearrange production areas in places where summer-autumn rice is grown to ensure the season and appropriate crop structure (selecting cold-loving crops that are still in season). This will help complete the proposed winter crop planting plan.

Winter crop production is still identified as the third main crop of the year with many crops of high commodity value, such as: Cucumber, green squash, pumpkin, waxy corn, vegetables, etc. These are crops that require strict planting season, ensuring productivity and product quality. Overcoming the limitations of the season due to the impact of flooding will help localities complete the planned planting area.
