Russian newspaper says Wagner boss closes media group

Russian media reported that Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin closed the Patriot media group and terminated contracts with employees.

Izvestia , based in the Russian capital Moscow, on June 30 quoted a source saying that Patriot employees had received notice of contract termination.

Yevgeny Zubarev, editor-in-chief of the Federal News Agency (RIA Fan), a unit of the Patriot group, announced the closure of the media outlet on the same day. "Patriot will also cease its activities and close down with us," Mr. Zubarev said.

Some Patriot employees also confirmed the information. They received a notice from their managers that their June salaries would be transferred next week, TASS reported.

Patriot Group was founded in October 2019, its subsidiaries are RIA Fan, Nevskiye Novosti, Narodnye Novosti, Ekonomika Segodnya and Politika Segodnya. Mr. Prigozhin is the founder of Patriot and heads the board of directors of the group.

The news of the closure of the Patriot Media Group came nearly a week after the Wagner uprising. On June 24, Prigozhin ordered two Wagner groups to march to Rostov-on-Don and Moscow to "demonstrate against the government, not to overthrow it."

After talks brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Prigozhin agreed to withdraw his forces and ordered the Wagner units under his command to return to barracks "to avoid bloodshed".

After the riots last weekend, Mr. Prigozhin and many Wagner members traveled to Belarus. President Lukashenko said on June 30 that Belarus welcomed Wagner soldiers to help train the army.
