Ms. Vu Que Anh (right photo) is instructed on techniques for planting mulberry trees after rain and floods.

Taking advantage of favorable weather, Ms. Vu Que Anh urgently planted new mulberry varieties that were supported. More than 3 sao of mulberry cultivation that was buried by floods and storms have now been replanted with hybrid mulberry varieties with strong growth ability, good resistance to pests and diseases and high productivity. "We think that we have to depend on the land. However, we also have to depend on our own strength. For example, my family only needs to make 70-80 silkworm rings each year, each silkworm ring sells for 3.1 million VND, then we can earn about 200 million VND", Ms. Vu Que Anh, village 2 Tan Van, Kim Son commune, Bao Yen district shared.

Immediately after the rain and storm, Bao Yen district coordinated with the Central Sericulture Research Center to conduct field training for agricultural staff and people (photo above). Through the training, agricultural staff and people have mastered techniques to overcome some damaged areas that can be recovered, reduce the cost of new planting and implement new planting, stabilize leaf yield to raise silkworms in the spring crop. "People need to pay attention to planting at the right distance and density, ensuring that the mulberry trees develop during the business period to limit diseases. When planting, people should keep the roots straight, not horizontal, so that when the weather is flooded or stormy, the trees will not fall over," said Dr. Nguyen Thi Min, Deputy Director of the Central Sericulture Research Center.

Previously, Bao Yen had 35 hectares of mulberry trees planted in the communes of Kim Son, Bao Ha, Cam Con, Viet Tien, Xuan Thuong, Minh Tan. However, after the circulation of storm No. 3, more than 20 hectares were affected, many areas could not be restored to production. Currently, the local agricultural sector is focusing on supporting seeds, fertilizers, especially instructing people on planting and care techniques. "To support people in restoring production, Bao Yen also received support from the Institute of Agricultural Sciences , the Central Sericulture Research Center, and the Department of Agriculture with 10 hectares of mulberry seedlings to help people restore mulberry trees. The district also used the budget to support seeds for people. In the coming time, according to the plan of the Provincial People's Committee, there will be a policy mechanism to support and develop the mulberry industry," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Director of the Bao Yen District Agricultural Service Center.

According to the plan to develop and expand the production of mulberry and silk in the province, by the end of 2025, Bao Yen will expand and reach the mulberry growing area of 70 hectares. The goal is still quite far away, while there is not much time left, not to mention the negative impacts from weather, pests, etc., so to make Bao Yen a key area for mulberry and silk production in the province according to the plan, it requires great determination from the government and farmers.
