President Joan Laporta faces a difficult challenge as the clubs are operating at a loss. |
Barcelona is not just a football club, but also a major sporting brand with four professional sports: basketball, handball, futsal, and hockey. Over the decades, the club has achieved remarkable success.
However, in the context of a challenging global economy , maintaining competitiveness is becoming a difficult task for Barcelona. Increasingly limited financial resources are forcing the club to carefully consider how to maintain the quality of play in all sports.
Despite significant budget cuts for individual sports in the 2023/24 season, the total loss still amounted to €32 million. This loss dragged down the club's finances and directly impacted the first-team wage bill. According to regulations, salaries paid to other sports are also included in the team's overall wage limit.
Basketball has the highest losses in the entire system. Despite drastic cuts, the team's expenses still far exceed revenue. This season, they are expected to earn €21.7 million, while total expenses amount to €40.59 million, including €31.58 million in salaries and €8 million in other operating costs.
The basketball team's total losses are nearly 19 million euros. Professionally, the team is also not performing well, currently ranked 5th inthe ACB (Spanish National Championship) and 8th in the Euroleague. The club has decided not to sign replacement players despite numerous injuries, in order to limit further expenses.
The fact that other sports clubs are operating at a loss directly impacts the men's soccer team. |
Handball has brought Barcelona the most titles, especially at the continental level. However, they also face increasing financial competition from other European teams. Revenue reached only €2.38 million, while total expenses amounted to €9.31 million, including €7.35 million in salaries. The loss was nearly €7 million.
Barca's futsal team finished second in the LNFS (Spanish National Futsal League), but financially, the situation wasn't very bright. Revenue was only €1.76 million, while total expenses were €5.63 million (€4.44 million in salaries and €1.19 million in other costs). They incurred a loss of nearly €3.9 million.
Hockey is the smallest team in the system, yet it recorded significant losses. Revenue was a mere 608,000 euros, while total expenses amounted to 3.09 million euros (2.24 million euros for personnel and 850,000 euros for other costs), resulting in a deficit of nearly 2.7 million euros.
Apart from the men's team, the women's football division is the only one operating profitably. With revenue of €19.1 million, personnel costs of €12.68 million, and operating expenses of €4.44 million, the women's team earned a profit of €217,000 – a small but positive figure, and expected to continue growing in the near future.
In the 2022/23 season, Barca set a record by winning all six domestic titles in all professional competitions, a historic achievement. However, the major challenge now is how to make clubs sustainably self-sufficient, or at least reduce losses, by increasing revenue without relying entirely on the men's football team.
