According to German press reports, the dispute between 33-year-old goalkeeper Ter Stegen and Barcelona arises from his unwillingness to allow them to share his medical data with La Liga, which could allow Barcelona to register new players depending on the length of his absence.
Ter Stegen also recently posted on social media, saying he would be out for three months while La Liga rules require a player to be out for at least four months to be considered a long-term absentee.
In response to Ter Stegen's actions, Barcelona's board of directors decided to strip him of the captaincy. In a statement, Barcelona said: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player Marc-Andre ter Stegen until this matter is resolved.
By mutual agreement with the sporting and coaching staff, it has been decided to temporarily step down from his role as first team captain. During this period, the captain's duties will be assumed by the current vice-captain, Ronald Araujo."
Ter Stegen has made over 400 appearances for Barcelona since moving from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014. He has won numerous trophies with the team including the Champions League and six La Liga titles.
