According to the police, Thai and Lien lived together as husband and wife and had two children together. Nguyen Minh Huy (born in 1997, residing in Hoa Phu commune, Dak Lak province) was also involved in the case. After committing the crime, Huy was arrested, while Thai and Lien fled the area.

Initial investigations revealed that Huy and Thai knew each other while serving sentences at My Phuoc Prison (formerly Tien Giang province). After their release, around June 2022, Huy went to Ho Chi Minh City to find work and met Thai again. Needing money for personal expenses, the two decided to go to Dak Lak, rent a guesthouse, and prepare bolt cutters and lock-picking tools to commit theft.

At night, Huy drove a motorbike carrying Thai to scout the roads. When they spotted houses with locked doors and no one watching, they would sneak in, cut the locks, and steal property. In October 2022, Nguyen Thi Phuong Lien went to Dak Lak and joined Huy and Thai in committing thefts.
From the end of September to the beginning of November 2022, the group of three suspects committed eight thefts in Dak Lak province, with a total value of over 240 million VND.
After Huy's arrest, Thai and Lien constantly changed their whereabouts, hiding in many provinces and cities across the country and in Cambodia. Upon determining that the two suspects had just returned from Cambodia and were hiding in Dong Nai province, the Criminal Police Department of Dak Lak Provincial Police dispatched a task force to successfully apprehend them.
The case is currently under further investigation and will be handled in accordance with the law.
