Japanese police said on May 26 that they had arrested a suspect in connection with a stabbing and shooting attack that left four people dead the day before.
The suspect was identified as Masanori Aoki, 31 years old, the eldest son of Mr. Masamichi Aoki - Chairman of the Nakano City Council, Nagano province, central Japan.
The suspect went into hiding after stabbing a woman to death and shooting two police officers with a shotgun, an investigative source said earlier. Police also said an elderly woman was found wounded and unconscious outside a home but later died.
Meanwhile, local authorities said they found a man injured and two other women, including the suspect's mother, escaped. The suspect's father, Masamichi Aoki, 57, is now confirmed safe.
Police initially received an emergency call at 4:25 p.m. local time on May 25 about a stabbing in Nakano, northern Nagano Prefecture. Security forces later warned local residents that a man carrying a gun or knife was still wandering around the area.
Residents were advised not to leave their homes unless necessary, while students at primary and secondary schools were asked to evacuate to safety.
Authorities are urgently investigating the suspect's motive for the attack.
