Disadvantages due to weather - many cinnamon areas in Thong Nhat commune are affected

Việt NamViệt Nam09/04/2024

With seed support from the sustainable development program, in June 2023, Mr. Dien Van Vong, in Chang village, Thong Nhat commune, Lao Cai city, planted 8,000 cinnamon trees to replace the 3-year-old Bodhi tree. However, up to this point, many cinnamon trees have died, leaving the land for grass to grow. Similar to Mr. Vong's household, 11 poor and near-poor households in Chang village were supported with 50,000 cinnamon seedlings, but the death rate was up to 70%.

Mr. Vong said: "My family is short of people, and I am too old to work, so I have to hire people to plant, 250,000 VND per day; my children and grandchildren also help plant, but now, many cinnamon trees are dying, the survival rate is not very high."

After converting a 3-year-old Bodhi tree area to grow 8,000 cinnamon trees, the high death rate of the trees has made Mr. Vong's family very worried.

Mr. Lu Van Thang's household in Khe Luoc village, Thong Nhat commune, received support from the State for 10,000 cinnamon seedlings at the end of 2023. At this time, he has only planted 1,000 trees, but the survival rate is not high. "The cinnamon trees kept withering, and spraying water did not help them grow. Later, most of the trees died, out of 10,000 trees, now there are only about 3,000 trees left," Mr. Thang added.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Moi, Secretary of the Party Cell of Chang village, Thong Nhat commune, Lao Cai city, added: "The death rate of cinnamon seedlings planted on the hill is high, from 30% to 75%. The cause is due to dry weather or planting not in the right season for cinnamon."

From the capital of the national target program for sustainable development, in 2022 and 2023, Thong Nhat commune supported poor and near-poor households with 600,000 cinnamon seedlings, but the low survival rate forced the locality to recalculate the planting plan.

Cinnamon seedlings are gradually dying. From 10,000 supported trees, now Mr. Thang (in yellow shirt) only has about 3,000 trees left.

Mr. Pham Dinh Thiep, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thong Nhat Commune, Lao Cai City said: "In 2022, the time when the seeds were provided was also late compared to the season, so when people brought the trees to plant, there was a drought. We have directed to provide compensation seeds in 2023 to replace the dead trees. We also directed that all cinnamon seeds brought back must be incubated at home, and only after the recent rains were they planted."

It is inevitable that agricultural and forestry production will suffer damage due to severe weather. Therefore, it is necessary to have closer attention from professional agencies and local authorities in calculating the planting season and instructing farmers on care techniques. Only then will the State's investment resources be effective.
