GĐXH - The patient was admitted to the hospital with a yellow, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Doctors removed a foreign object, a cylindrical plastic mass, nearly 2cm long, that had been in the patient's vagina for many years.
According to Master, Doctor Phan Le Minh Tien, Department of Nephrology - Urology, Children's Hospital 2, recently, doctors examined and removed a foreign object left for about 3 years in the vagina of patient BC (born in 2016, residing in Dak Lak province ).
The patient was admitted to the hospital with a yellow, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. The family said the patient occasionally had frequent urination and normal bowel movements. The patient had been examined at a local hospital for about 3 years but no foreign objects were found. Seeing that the condition was not improving, the family took the patient to Children's Hospital 2.
Upon admission, the patient was examined by doctors and suspected of having a foreign object in the vagina, requiring surgery to remove the object. The surgical team included Dr. Phan Tan Duc - Head of the Department of Nephrology and Master. Dr. Phan Le Minh Tien - Department of Nephrology.
Commenting on this case, Dr. Phan Tan Duc - Head of the Department of Nephrology - Urology said that the foreign object had been there for a long time, causing deep inflammation and ulcers in the left cul-de-sac of the vagina, affecting the removal process. The foreign object was a cylindrical plastic block, nearly 2cm long.
Fortunately, after examination, no rectal perforation was found. However, in the long term, there is a risk of vaginal stenosis, so the patient needs regular check-ups.
What should parents do to avoid foreign body in children?
As an expert in the field of Nephrology, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach - Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 2 shared more. Every year, the hospital receives and removes vaginal foreign bodies for about 6-7 cases of girls, usually aged 5 years and under. Foreign bodies are usually small objects, cotton, buttons, toy batteries... Most children have signs of vaginal discharge, even bleeding, accompanied by itching... discovered by their families and brought to the hospital.
To avoid similar foreign body situations, parents should closely monitor their children, clean and maintain their genitals, and not use adult cleaning solutions if they see any discharge. When detecting unusual signs in children, parents should take their children to a pediatrician immediately.
