8-year-old girl dies after being stabbed by teacher in Korea

(CLO) A heartbreaking incident occurred at an elementary school in Daejeon city, South Korea, when a female teacher used a knife to attack and kill an 8-year-old girl.

According to information from the Korean police, at around 6 p.m. on February 10, on the second floor of an elementary school in Seo District, Daejeon City (160 km south of Seoul), a female teacher and an 8-year-old female student were discovered with multiple stab wounds on their bodies. Although rescuers quickly took the student to the hospital, the girl did not survive.

The teacher, in her 40s, also suffered injuries to her arms and neck but was still conscious. During questioning later that day, she admitted to her actions. Police believe she may have caused the injuries herself after attacking the student.

According to the student’s usual schedule, the student usually attended boarding school until 4:20 p.m., then continued to attend art class starting at 4:40 p.m. However, when the art class reported the student’s absence, the student’s parents contacted the police at 5:18 p.m.

At 5:50 p.m., the school notified the police that someone was locked in the audiovisual room on the second floor. When police arrived, they found both the teacher and the student lying on the floor. A knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, was also found at the scene.

Because the audio-visual room was not equipped with surveillance cameras, investigators need more time to clarify the cause and developments of the incident.

"The teacher is undergoing surgery. We will conduct an investigation as soon as possible," a Daejeon police official said. The teacher had taken leave last year due to depression and only returned to work at the end of the year. Police also confirmed that she had no previous relationship with the victim.

The incident has shocked public opinion and raised many questions about security and management in the educational environment in Korea.
