Flooding is a common phenomenon on Malaysia's east coast during the annual rainy season from October to March, forcing thousands of people to evacuate each year.

A report from the country's National Disaster Management Agency showed that 11,009 people from 3,839 families were affected by floods in the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu and Selangor, as of 6am on Monday (local time).
The northeastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand, was the worst hit with 8,228 people affected. No casualties have been reported.
Sixty temporary evacuation centers have been opened in affected states to accommodate flood evacuees, the agency reported.
About 400 people were trapped by a landslide caused by continuous rain in Wang Kelian village in Perlis state in northwestern Malaysia on Sunday.
They are now safe and taking shelter in a mosque on higher ground, state news agency Bernama reported late on Sunday.
