Efforts to overcome

Three days have passed since the flood receded, but the schoolyard at Dien Khanh 2 Primary School (Dien Khanh Commune) is still covered in a thick layer of mud, some places up to 10-15cm high, making cleanup difficult. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa - Principal of the school said that because the school is located in front of the Cai River basin, when it rains heavily, a lot of mud and soil is poured in. The mud is drying up, causing the school gate to get stuck and unable to open, so the school had to hire a dump truck to handle the situation. According to preliminary statistics, 286 students (accounting for nearly 50% of the total number of students in the school) lost all their books and notebooks; 47 computers were flooded and damaged. Currently, the school's priority is to clean desks, chairs, and classrooms to ensure the minimum conditions for students to return to school soon.

Most of the books and documents at Dien Khanh 2 Town Primary School library were wet and damaged.

At Tran Quang Khai Secondary School (Dien Dien Commune), Mr. Tran Trong Huy - Principal of the school was busy with the staff, teachers and employees collecting piles of wet and damaged files and books to classify, process and save the documents that can still be used. Thanks to the support of the Navy Region 4 troops, on November 24, the amount of mud in the classrooms and school yard was significantly treated. "We are trying our best to stabilize teaching and learning soon. The current difficulty is the lack of clean water. Only when there is water can we organize for students to go to school normally" - said Mr. Huy.

Care and support for students

Mr. Le Dinh Thuan - Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Education and Training said that the department has established 4 inspection teams at educational institutions heavily affected by floods to direct the recovery work and prepare appropriate teaching and learning plans. The armed forces have supported schools in cleaning classrooms and schoolyards. After completing the cleaning, some schools were sprayed with disinfectant by the health sector to ensure epidemic prevention safety before welcoming students back.

Along with the recovery work, support for students who lost their books and school supplies was also implemented. On November 23, the Provincial People's Committee decided to support 500,000 VND/student from primary school and above from households whose houses were flooded to help them buy new books and school supplies. The Department of Education and Training is synthesizing the textbook needs of schools to coordinate with publishers to promptly support students; at the same time, mobilizing social resources to join hands to support schools and students in flood-affected areas, helping teaching and learning activities to stabilize soon.

As of November 24, the province had 70 out of 798 educational establishments unable to let students return to school due to severe damage, including 24 kindergartens, 22 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, 7 high schools, and 2 vocational schools. The total number of students not yet attending school was 33,570. The estimated damage to the education sector to date is more than 80 billion VND.
