Despite the presence of Messi, the opening match was considered boring as it ended without any goals being scored.
Things might have been different if Trezeguet hadn't squandered the opportunity.
In the 43rd minute of the match, Al Ahly was awarded a penalty. Trezeguet stepped up to take the responsibility, but his powerful shot was blocked by goalkeeper Ustari.
Not only that, Trezeguet also caused great disappointment when he rushed in to cushion the ball unsuccessfully, even though the distance was now only 7-8 meters.
The fans were obviously disappointed. After this missed penalty, Al Ahly lost their dominance. They were heavily pressed by Messi's team in the second half and were lucky to escape defeat in the final minutes. Had Trezeguet scored, things could have been different.
But that's not why Trezeguet was punished. Egyptian media said the 30-year-old striker was punished by the team's management for competing with his teammate for the right to take a penalty.
Trezeguet was not at the top of the penalty priority list, but he took the opportunity to score his first goal at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The number one penalty taker at Al Ahly is UAE striker Abou Ali. He spoke up to defend Trezeguet and affirmed that he gave in when his teammate wanted to take the kick.
However, the coaching staff and the Al Ahly management were not satisfied with Trezeguet's behavior. The 30-year-old striker received a fine after the match.
The fine was not made public, but an Egyptian journalist revealed on social media that Trezeguet was fined 1 million EGP (Egyptian currency), equivalent to 20,000 USD (more than 500 million VND).
For Trezeguet, this fine is not too high because he receives a salary of up to 3 million USD/year at Al Ahly.
